Introduction
The sun of 17 Ramadan, 2 AH, was nearing sunset. The dust of the battlefield had settled, the clash of swords had fallen silent, and one of the greatest chapters in Arabian history had been written.
The Quraysh, who had marched from Makkah with pride, arrogance, and confidence in their strength, had suffered a crushing defeat. Their leading chiefs lay lifeless on the battlefield, and their army had been scattered.
On the other side, the Muslims had witnessed the help of Allah with their own eyes. Only hours earlier, they had feared for their lives; now they were thanking Allah for His victory and support.
Yet the story of Badr did not end with victory. In reality, the events that followed the battle were just as important and instructive as the battle itself.
Silence on the Battlefield of Badr
After the fighting had ended, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gathered his Companions.
The bodies of the Quraysh leaders were scattered across the battlefield. Among them were men who had spent years persecuting Islam and its followers.
Abu Jahl, Utbah ibn Rabiah, Shaybah ibn Rabiah, Umayyah ibn Khalaf, and other prominent chiefs had met their fate.
Before the eyes of the believers, the promise of Allah had come true.
Background of the Battle of Badr: Part 1 The Events That Changed the Course of History Read here
The Quraysh Chiefs and the Well of Badr
The Prophet ﷺ ordered that the bodies of the leading Quraysh chiefs be placed in a dry well at Badr.
This well became known as the Well of Badr (Qalib Badr).
The bodies of the major leaders were thrown into it.
Three days later, the Prophet ﷺ came to the edge of the well with some of his Companions and addressed the dead by name:
“O Utbah ibn Rabiah! O Shaybah ibn Rabiah! O Umayyah ibn Khalaf! O Abu Jahl ibn Hisham!
Have you found your Lord’s promise to be true?
As for me, I have found my Lord’s promise to be true.”
The Companions were surprised.
Umar ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه said:
“O Messenger of Allah, are you speaking to people who are dead?”
The Prophet ﷺ replied:
“By the One in whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad, you do not hear what I am saying any better than they do, but they are unable to respond.”
This scene was a powerful reminder of Allah’s power and the reality of the Hereafter.
Part 1: Battle of Uhud: Complete History Read Here
The Prisoners of Badr
Approximately seventy polytheists were taken prisoner during the Battle of Badr.
This was the first time the Muslims had captured such a large number of prisoners of war.
Among them were several influential figures of Quraysh.
Different Companions were assigned to guard the prisoners.
The Prophet ﷺ immediately instructed:
“Treat the prisoners well.”
These words remain among the greatest principles of conduct in the history of warfare.
The Muslims’ Kind Treatment of the Prisoners
The prisoners were distributed among the Companions.
Before leaving the battlefield, the Prophet ﷺ specifically instructed them to treat the captives kindly.
The Companions followed this command so faithfully that their conduct became a remarkable example in history.
Some prisoners later recalled:
“The Muslims would give us bread to eat while they themselves survived on dates.”
At that time, bread was considered a valuable food, while dates were the common staple.
Despite their own limited resources, the Muslims offered the better food to their captives.
The prisoners were astonished that the very people they had fought against only a day earlier were now treating them with such kindness and compassion.
This noble character later became a reason for many hearts to incline toward Islam.
The Captivity of Al-Abbas
Among the prisoners was Al-Abbas ibn Abdul-Muttalib رضي الله عنه, the uncle of the Prophet ﷺ.
Hazrat Abbas (RA) was physically strong, so his bonds were tied tightly during the night.
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard Hazrat Abbas (RA) expressing discomfort, he became concerned.
Seeing the Prophet’s ﷺ concern, the Companions loosened the ropes that bound Hazrat Abbas (RA).
When the Prophet ﷺ was informed of this, he said:
“Then loosen the bonds of all the prisoners as well.”
Thus, kindness and leniency were shown to all the captives.
This incident is a clear example of the Prophet’s ﷺ justice, which rose above family ties and personal relationships. He did not approve of a special concession being granted only to his uncle; rather, he instructed that all prisoners be treated with the same compassion and fairness.

Al-Abbas’s Ransom and a Remarkable Incident
When the ransom amounts were determined, Al-Abbas رضي الله عنه said:
“O Messenger of Allah, I do not possess enough wealth to pay this ransom.”
The Prophet ﷺ replied:
“What about the wealth that you left with Umm al-Fadl before departing from Makkah, when you told her that if anything happened to you on this journey, it should belong to your children?”
Al-Abbas was astonished.
No one had been present when that conversation took place except him and his wife.
He immediately said:
“By Allah, this is something that only Allah could have informed you about.”
This incident further strengthened his inclination toward Islam and stood as a clear sign of the truthfulness of the Prophet’s mission.
The Question of Ransom
The next issue was how the prisoners should be dealt with.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ consulted his Companions.
This consultation remains a shining example of the importance of mutual consultation in Islam.
The Historic Battle of Khaybar Read Here
Abu Bakr’s Opinion
Abu Bakr al-Siddiq رضي الله عنه said:
“O Messenger of Allah, they are our relatives, cousins, and kinsmen. I believe we should accept ransom from them and release them.”
He added:
“Perhaps Allah will later open their hearts to Islam.”
His opinion reflected mercy, compassion, and hope.
Umar’s Opinion
Umar ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه offered a different view.
He suggested that a firmer approach should be taken because these individuals had been among Islam’s most determined enemies.
His perspective focused on strengthening the Muslim community and weakening its hostile opponents.
Both opinions were sincere and motivated by concern for Islam.
The Battle of Mu’tah Read Here
The Prophet’s Decision
The Prophet ﷺ adopted the opinion of Abu Bakr
It was decided that ransom would be accepted and the prisoners released.
The amount varied according to each prisoner’s financial situation.
Some paid four thousand dirhams, while others paid less.
This decision later contributed to the acceptance of Islam by a number of former prisoners.
However, Allah later revealed:
“It is not for a Prophet to have captives until he has thoroughly subdued the land.”
This verse highlighted the strategic wisdom of further weakening the enemy before accepting ransom under those particular circumstances.
Zaynab’s Necklace: A Touching Moment
Among the prisoners was Abu al-As ibn al-Rabi, the husband of Zaynab رضي الله عنها, the daughter of the Prophet ﷺ.
When Zaynab learned of her husband’s captivity in Makkah, she became deeply distressed.
She prepared a ransom for his release.
Among the items she sent was a necklace.
This was no ordinary necklace.
It was the very necklace that Khadijah رضي الله عنها had given her daughter as a wedding gift.
When the necklace was presented before the Prophet ﷺ, he fell silent for a few moments.
His eyes remained fixed upon it.
It was not merely a valuable piece of jewelry; it carried precious memories.
It reminded him of Khadijah رضي الله عنها—the woman who had stood beside him during the earliest and most difficult days of Prophethood, who had devoted her wealth, love, and life to the cause of Islam.
The Companions noticed the emotion on the Prophet’s face and understood the significance of the necklace.
The Prophet ﷺ then said:
“If you see fit, release Abu al-As and return Zaynab’s necklace to her.”
The Companions immediately agreed.
Abu al-As was released, and the necklace was respectfully returned.
The Prophet ﷺ also took a pledge from Abu al-As that he would not prevent Zaynab from migrating to Madinah. He fulfilled his promise, and Zaynab later joined the Muslim community in Madinah.
This incident remains a beautiful example of mercy, loyalty, and noble character.

Freedom Through Education: A Unique Decision
Some prisoners were too poor to pay ransom.
However, a number of them were literate.
In a society where literacy was uncommon, knowledge was a valuable asset.
According to well-known reports from the books of Seerah, the Prophet ﷺ made a unique and wise decision.
Those prisoners who could not pay ransom would be freed if they taught ten Muslim children how to read and write.
This arrangement was extraordinary.
It provided the prisoners with a dignified path to freedom while simultaneously spreading knowledge within the Muslim community.
It also demonstrated the importance Islam placed upon education from its earliest days.
The Revelation of Surah Al-Anfal
After the battle, discussions arose among some Muslims regarding the distribution of the spoils of war.
Some had pursued the fleeing enemy.
Others had gathered the spoils.
Still others had remained near the Prophet ﷺ to protect him.
Each group felt that it had performed a particularly important role.
At this time, Surah Al-Anfal was revealed.
Allah reminded the believers that victory had not come through their own strength but through His support.
Therefore, the matter of distributing the spoils was left to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.
This event taught the Muslims that every contribution to a collective success is valuable and that unity must take precedence over personal claims.
Preparing for the Return to Madinah
After spending several days at Badr, the Muslims prepared to return to Madinah.
This journey was entirely different from the one that had brought them to Badr.
They had set out uncertain of what lay ahead.
Now they returned as witnesses to a magnificent victory granted by Allah.
Their hearts were filled with gratitude, humility, and joy.
News of Victory Reaches Madinah
The Prophet ﷺ sent Zayd ibn Harithah رضي الله عنه and Abdullah ibn Rawahah رضي الله عنه ahead to deliver the news of victory to Madinah.
The believers were overjoyed upon hearing the news, while the hypocrites and enemies of Islam were shocked and troubled.
The victory was so unexpected that some people initially found it difficult to believe that the mighty Quraysh had suffered such a devastating defeat.
This was not merely a military triumph.
It was a victory that ensured the survival, security, and future growth of the Muslim community.
By the time the Muslim army approached Madinah, news of the victory had already spread throughout the city.
People eagerly awaited the return of their loved ones.
Men, women, children, and the elderly were filled with gratitude and happiness.
The streets of Madinah echoed with praise and thanks to Allah.
The Muslims understood that the victory of Badr had changed the course of history.
A small community once regarded as weak had defeated the most powerful force in Arabia.
It was a manifestation of Allah’s support that would be remembered for generations.

Conclusion
The events that followed the Battle of Badr provide shining examples of justice, mercy, wisdom, and noble character in Islam.
The humane treatment of prisoners, the story of Zaynab’s necklace, freedom through education, and the Qur’anic guidance regarding the spoils of war all demonstrate that Islam upholds human dignity, fairness, and morality even after victory.
These events were not merely the aftermath of a battle; they marked the beginning of the practical implementation of Islamic principles in society and governance.
They demonstrated the value of compassion, knowledge, consultation, and obedience to divine guidance.
Badr proved that the foundation of the Islamic state was not military strength alone, but faith, justice, learning, consultation, and exemplary character. These were the principles that later carried Islam far beyond the Arabian Peninsula.
To be continued......
In the final part of this series, we will explore how the victory of Badr transformed the political landscape of Arabia, the special status of the People of Badr in Islam, the fate of Abu Lahab, and the timeless lessons that this historic battle continues to offer the Muslim Ummah today.
