The Complete History of the Battle of Badr | Part 2: The First Great Confrontation Between Truth and Falsehood

ghazwa-e-badr-ki-mukammal-tareekh

Introduction

In Part One, we explored the events that led to the Battle of Badr. The confiscation of Muslim property, the continued hostility of Quraysh, the caravan of Abu Sufyan, and the military preparations of Makkah all contributed to a confrontation that would change the course of history.

Now both armies stood near the plains of Badr. On one side were 313 devoted believers with limited resources. On the other stood nearly one thousand warriors of Quraysh, equipped with superior weapons, horses, and military strength.

By all worldly standards, the Muslims appeared to be at a disadvantage. Yet Allah had decreed that this day would become a lesson for humanity until the end of time.

The Battlefield of Badr

Badr was located southwest of Madinah and was known for its wells and strategic position along major trade routes.

Water was a crucial factor in desert warfare. Upon arriving at Badr, the Prophet Muhammad selected a camping location for the Muslim army.

Hazrat Hubab ibn al-Mundhir رضي الله عنه respectfully asked whether the location had been chosen through divine revelation or military strategy. When the Prophet explained that it was a matter of strategy, Hubab suggested moving closer to the wells and securing the water supply.

The Prophet accepted this advice.

This incident remains one of the finest examples of consultation and strategic thinking in Islamic history.

The Muslim Army and Its Resources

The Muslim army consisted of approximately 313 believers.

Among them were:

  • Around 82 Muhajirun (Migrants)
  • 61 members of Aws
  • About 170 members of Khazraj

The Muslims possessed only two horses and a limited number of camels. Several companions had to share a single camel and take turns riding.

The Prophet himself shared a camel with Ali ibn Abi Talib رضي الله عنه and Marthad ibn Abi Marthad رضي الله عنه.

In contrast, the army of Quraysh numbered around one thousand men with one hundred horses, hundreds of camels, and abundant weapons.

The Night Before the Battle

The night before the battle was one of the most memorable nights in Islamic history.

Although the believers possessed strong faith, they were still human. Before them stood the most powerful force in Arabia.

Allah sent tranquility upon the Muslims. Many companions experienced a peaceful sleep that strengthened their hearts and removed anxiety.

That same night, Allah sent rain.

The rain benefited the Muslims by firming the sandy ground beneath them, making movement easier. On the other hand, the area occupied by Quraysh became muddy and difficult to navigate.

Allah mentions this blessing in the Qur'an:

"And He sent down upon you rain from the sky to purify you thereby, remove from you the evil of Satan, strengthen your hearts, and make firm your feet."

The Construction of the Arish

The companions built a shaded structure known as the Arish for the Prophet ﷺ.

This served as a command post from which he could oversee the battlefield and direct the army.

Sa'd ibn Mu'adh رضي الله عنه and a group of Ansar stood guard around the structure to ensure the Prophet's safety.

Their devotion reflected the deep love and loyalty they held for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

The Battle of Mu’tah Read Here

The Prophet's Supplication

On the morning of 17 Ramadan, the Prophet turned toward Allah in heartfelt prayer.

He raised his hands and repeatedly sought divine assistance.

Among his supplications was:

"O Allah, if this small group is destroyed today, You will not be worshipped on earth."

The Prophet prayed with such sincerity that his cloak slipped from his shoulders.

Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه picked it up and placed it back upon him, saying:

"O Messenger of Allah, Allah will certainly fulfill His promise to you."

This scene remains one of the greatest examples of reliance upon Allah in Islamic history.

Formation of the Battle Lines

As morning arrived, both armies formed their ranks.

The Prophet personally organized the Muslim lines and instructed the believers to remain disciplined and steadfast.

Meanwhile, Quraysh felt confident in their numerical superiority and military strength.

They expected a quick victory.

However, Allah had decreed otherwise.

The Opening Duels

According to the military customs of that era, major battles did not usually begin immediately with a full-scale attack. Before the general fighting started, the most renowned warriors from each side would step forward and challenge one another to single combat.

This tradition allowed both armies to display the courage, strength, and skill of their finest fighters before the battle officially began.

With pride and confidence, three of Makkah's most prominent warriors entered the battlefield on behalf of Quraysh:

  • Utbah ibn Rabi'ah

  • Shaybah ibn Rabi'ah

  • Walid ibn Utbah

Initially, a few warriors from the Ansar stepped forward to face them. However, the leaders of Quraysh insisted on fighting men from their own tribe.

The Prophet Muhammad then called upon three distinguished companions:

"O Hamzah, stand up.

O Ali, stand up.

O Ubaydah ibn al-Harith, stand up."

Thus began the first direct confrontation between the champions of Islam and the champions of disbelief—a duel that would offer an early glimpse of the outcome that awaited the two armies.

The Tragic Story of King Nebuchadnezzar Read Here

The Courage of Hamzah

Hamzah رضي الله عنه, known as the Lion of Allah, confronted Shaybah ibn Rabi'ah.

Within a short time, Hamzah defeated and killed his opponent.

His bravery inspired the Muslim army and demonstrated the strength of faith in action.

Ali's Heroic Victory

Despite his young age, Ali displayed remarkable courage and skill, defeating his opponent in combat.

His role at Badr became one of the defining moments of his life.

The Sacrifice of Ubaydah

Ubaydah ibn al-Harith رضي الله عنه engaged Utbah ibn Rabi'ah in fierce combat.

Both men sustained serious injuries.

Hamzah and Ali later joined the fight and helped defeat Utbah.

Ubaydah's wounds eventually proved fatal, and he became one of the honored martyrs of Badr.

The Battle Begins

Following the opening duels, the battle officially began.

The Prophet Muhammad instructed the Companions to continue shooting arrows until the enemy came within close range.

As the fighting commenced, the Prophet picked up a handful of dust and small pebbles and cast them toward the enemy while proclaiming:

"Shahat al-Wujuh"

"May their faces be disfigured."

By the will of Allah, particles from that handful reached the eyes and faces of many of the polytheists, causing confusion and weakening their morale.

Allah the Almighty refers to this remarkable event in the Qur'an:

"And you did not throw when you threw, but it was Allah who threw."

(Surah Al-Anfal 8:17)

This was a clear sign that the victory of the Muslims would not come through numbers or military strength alone, but through the help and support of Allah.

The handful of dust and pebbles became a source of fear, confusion, and disorder among the ranks of Quraysh.

After this, the Muslim army advanced with determination and launched a powerful attack against the enemy.

The Historic Battle of Khaybar Read Here

ivine Assistance Through the Angels

Allah promised His support to the believers.

He revealed:

"I will reinforce you with a thousand angels following one another."

The Qur'an mentions this divine assistance in several places.

Some companions later described witnessing extraordinary signs during the battle that indicated Allah's unseen help.

However, the ultimate source of victory was Allah Himself, while the angels served as a manifestation of His support and encouragement.

The Battle of Badr in the Qur'an

The Battle of Badr is not merely a historical event; it is a battle specifically mentioned in the Qur'an.

Allah reminds the believers:

"Indeed, Allah gave you victory at Badr when you were weak. So fear Allah that you may be grateful."

(Surah Aal Imran 3:123)

Regarding the supplication of the believers, Allah says:

"When you sought help from your Lord and He answered you: Indeed, I will reinforce you with a thousand angels following one another."

(Surah Al-Anfal 8:9)

Allah further declares:

"And victory is not except from Allah. Indeed, Allah is Almighty and Wise."

(Surah Al-Anfal 8:10)

These verses make it clear that the victory at Badr was not simply a military achievement. It was the result of Allah's support, the prayers of His Messenger , and the sincerity of the believers.

The Search for Abu Jahl

Abu Jahl was among the greatest enemies of Islam.

Two young companions from the Ansar, Mu'adh ibn Amr رضي الله عنه and Mu'awwidh ibn Afra رضي الله عنه, eagerly searched for him during the battle.

When they located him, they attacked courageously and inflicted severe wounds.

The End of Abu Jahl

After the battle, Abdullah ibn Mas'ud رضي الله عنه found Abu Jahl lying wounded on the battlefield.

Even in defeat, Abu Jahl remained arrogant.

Soon afterward, he met his end.

When the Prophet was informed, he said:

"This was the Pharaoh of this nation."

With his death, one of the fiercest enemies of Islam was removed forever.

The Fate of Umayyah ibn Khalaf

Umayyah ibn Khalaf was notorious for torturing Bilal ibn Rabah رضي الله عنه in Makkah.

On the Day of Badr, Bilal recognized him among the enemy ranks.

Umayyah was eventually killed during the battle.

For many believers, this was a powerful reminder that oppression does not go unanswered forever.

The Defeat of Quraysh

As the battle continued, the leading chiefs of Quraysh fell one after another.

Confusion spread throughout their ranks.

Fear replaced confidence, and their formation collapsed.

Many fled the battlefield while others were captured.

Against all expectations, Allah granted the Muslims a decisive victory.

The Martyrs of Badr

Fourteen Muslims embraced martyrdom in this historic battle.

Among them were six Muhajirun and eight Ansar.

Their sacrifice became an everlasting source of inspiration for future generations.

The Losses of Quraysh

Approximately seventy men from Quraysh were killed, including several prominent leaders:

  • Abu Jahl
  • Utbah ibn Rabi'ah
  • Shaybah ibn Rabi'ah
  • Walid ibn Utbah
  • Umayyah ibn Khalaf

Their deaths dealt a severe blow to the leadership of Makkah.

 Significance of the Victory

The victory at Badr was far more than a military success.

It announced the emergence of Islam as a powerful reality in Arabia.

The Islamic state in Madinah gained strength and recognition.

The surrounding tribes began viewing the Muslims with respect, while the believers themselves gained even greater confidence in Allah's promises.

Conclusion

The Battle of Badr remains one of the brightest chapters in Islamic history. It teaches that victory is not determined by numbers, wealth, or military power alone. Rather, success comes through faith, sincerity, patience, and trust in Allah.

On the plains of Badr, 313 believers demonstrated that when a community places its complete trust in Allah, even the strongest worldly forces can be overcome.

For this reason, Badr continues to symbolize faith, sacrifice, perseverance, and unwavering reliance upon Allah.
