Part 4: Permissible Matters During Menstruation, Signs of Purity, and the Method of Ghusl

Permissible Matters During Menstruation, Signs of Purity, and the Method of Ghusl

Menstruation is a natural condition experienced by women. During this time, Islamic law changes the rulings of certain acts of worship, but this does not mean that a menstruating woman herself becomes impure or that all normal relationships with her must stop. The authentic Hadiths show that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ continued to show affection and maintain normal family life with his wives during menstruation.

Some acts are restricted during menstruation, while many others remain completely permissible. This article explains the permissible matters, the signs that menstruation has ended, the method of ghusl, and the rulings concerning yellow or brown discharge before and after menstruation.

1. Different Forms of Intimacy During Menstruation

To understand the rulings concerning intimacy between husband and wife during menstruation, it is important to distinguish between different forms of physical contact. They do not all have the same ruling.

First Situation: Sexual Intercourse Through the Vagina

Sexual intercourse through the vagina during menstruation is prohibited. Allah Almighty says in the Qur’an:

“They ask you about menstruation. Say, ‘It is a state of discomfort, so keep away from women during menstruation and do not approach them until they become pure. When they have purified themselves, then approach them as Allah has commanded you.’”

(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:222)

This verse prohibits vaginal intercourse during menstruation. Once menstruation has ended and the woman has performed ghusl, marital intercourse becomes permissible.

Menstruation in Islam: Part 1 | Rulings, Age, Duration & Basic Fiqh Read Here

Second Situation: Intimacy While Wearing a Covering Cloth

Physical intimacy between husband and wife is permissible when the woman covers the area between her navel and knees with a cloth.

Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would ask me to wear a waist wrapper. I would put it on, and then he would have physical contact with me while I was menstruating.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari, 300)

In another narration, Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) explained that when one of the wives of the Prophet ﷺ was menstruating and he wished to be intimate with her, he would instruct her to wear a waist wrapper. He would then be intimate with her while she was menstruating.

(Sahih al-Bukhari, 302; Sahih Muslim, 293)

Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) also reported that the Prophet ﷺ would be physically intimate with his wives during menstruation while they wore a waist wrapper.

(Sahih al-Bukhari, 303; Sahih Muslim, 294)

These narrations show that physical closeness, touching, and other forms of intimacy are not prohibited in themselves during menstruation. The prohibited act is vaginal intercourse.

Third Situation: Direct Intimacy Between the Navel and the Knees Without a Covering

Scholars have differed regarding direct physical intimacy between the navel and the knees without a covering cloth.

According to Imam Malik, Imam Abu Hanifah, and Imam al-Shafi‘i (may Allah have mercy on them), direct intimacy in this area without a barrier should be avoided.

(Al-Mawahib al-Jalil, 1/374; Al-Bahr al-Ra’iq, 1/207; Al-Umm, 5/36)

On the other hand, Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (may Allah have mercy on him) held that a husband may enjoy physical intimacy with his menstruating wife in any part of her body except through vaginal intercourse.

It is reported from Imam Ahmad that, during menstruation, nothing is prohibited apart from intercourse through the vagina.

(Al-Mughni, 1/414; Al-Kafi, 1/160)

One of the important pieces of evidence cited for this view is the statement of Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). Masruq asked her what a husband was permitted to do with his wife while she was menstruating. She replied:

“Everything except the private part.”

(Tafsir al-Tabari, Jami‘ al-Bayan, 2/507)

Some scholars have also used the Qur’anic instruction, “Keep away from women during menstruation” (Al-Baqarah 2:222), to argue that the prohibition concerns vaginal intercourse rather than all physical contact with a menstruating woman.

However, taking the precaution of keeping a cloth between the bodies in this area is preferable. This follows the practice described in the Hadiths and avoids the disagreement among scholars.

Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) discussed the Prophet’s ﷺ practice of intimacy while wearing a waist wrapper. Al-‘Ayni (may Allah have mercy on him) also explained that this practice may be understood as preferable and more cautious.

(Al-Majmu‘, 2/366; ‘Umdat al-Qari, 3/267)

In this discussion, the word intimacy refers to physical contact and closeness, not vaginal intercourse.

2. Eating and Drinking With a Menstruating Woman

Eating and drinking with a menstruating woman is entirely permissible. Her body, sweat, and leftover food or drink are not impure merely because she is menstruating.

Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported:

“I would drink while menstruating and then hand the vessel to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He would place his mouth at the same place where I had placed mine. I would also eat meat from a bone and then hand it to him, and he would eat from the same place where I had eaten.”

(Sahih Muslim, 300)

This Hadith clearly refutes the misconception that a menstruating woman becomes physically impure because of menstruation.

3. A Menstruating Woman Washing Her Husband’s Head

A menstruating woman may wash her husband’s head. There is no religious prohibition against doing so.

Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported:

“I used to wash the head of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while I was menstruating.”

(Sahih Muslim, 297)

This shows that menstruation does not prevent ordinary acts of care and affection between spouses.

4. Combing Her Husband’s Hair

A menstruating woman may also comb her husband’s hair.

Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in the mosque, he would bring his head close to her while she was in her room, and she would comb his hair even when she was menstruating.

(Sahih Muslim, 297)

This narration further demonstrates that a menstruating woman’s body is not inherently impure.

Nafl Prayers in Islam: Ishraq, Chasht, Awwabin, Tahajjud and Salat al-Tasbih Read here

5. The Prophet ﷺ Reciting the Qur’an While Resting in the Lap of a Menstruating Woman

The body of a menstruating woman is not impure. One indication of this is that the Prophet ﷺ would rest his head in the lap of Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and recite the Qur’an while she was menstruating.

Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would recline in my lap and recite the Qur’an while I was menstruating.”

(Sahih Muslim, 301)

An important distinction should be made here. The ruling concerning the physical purity of a menstruating woman is separate from the rulings regarding her touching the physical copy of the Qur’an or reciting it verbally. These are separate jurisprudential questions and should not be treated as though they have the same ruling.

6. Remembering Allah, Making Du‘a, and Seeking Islamic Knowledge

A menstruating woman may remember Allah, make du‘a, recite words of glorification and praise, send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, say Bismillah before eating and drinking, and praise Allah Almighty.

She may also study Hadith and books of Islamic jurisprudence, listen to religious lessons, and say Ameen after a supplication.

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-‘Uthaymin (may Allah have mercy on him) explained that remembrance of Allah, supplication, saying Bismillah, studying Hadith and fiqh, and listening to the Qur’an are permissible for a menstruating woman.

(Risalah fi al-Dima’ al-Tabi‘iyyah lil-Nisa’, p. 23)

However, the rulings concerning verbal recitation of the Qur’an and touching the physical copy of the Qur’an are separate matters in Islamic jurisprudence. Permission to engage in general remembrance of Allah should not automatically be taken as permission for every form of Qur’anic recitation.

7. Entering Ihram and Performing Hajj or ‘Umrah During Menstruation

A menstruating woman may enter the state of ihram and perform most of the rites of Hajj or ‘Umrah. However, she must postpone Tawaf around the Ka‘bah until she becomes pure.

When Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) began menstruating during Hajj, the Prophet ﷺ told her:

“Do whatever a pilgrim does, except that you must not perform Tawaf around the House until you become pure.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari; Sahih Muslim)

This Hadith shows that menstruation does not prevent a woman from performing all the rites of Hajj or ‘Umrah. The specific restriction in this narration concerns Tawaf, which must be delayed until she becomes pure.

Signs That Menstruation Has Ended

When menstruation ends, a woman needs to determine whether she has become pure. Two commonly recognised signs of the end of menstruation are discussed below.

1. The Appearance of White Discharge

One sign that menstruation has ended is a white discharge known as al-qassah al-bayda’. Some women experience this discharge at the end of their menstrual period.

Women used to send cotton containing traces of menstrual blood to Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and ask whether they had become pure.

Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) would tell them:

“Do not be hasty until you see the white discharge.”

(Muwatta Imam Malik; a narration with this meaning is also reported in Sahih al-Bukhari.)

Hafiz Ibn Hajar (may Allah have mercy on him) explained al-qassah al-bayda’ as a white discharge that appears from the womb when menstruation has ended.

(Fath al-Bari, 1/321)

Not every woman experiences this sign. Therefore, the absence of white discharge does not necessarily mean that menstruation is continuing; the second sign may also be relevant.

2. Complete Dryness

The second sign is complete dryness, meaning that menstrual blood and its traces have stopped.

A woman may check with a clean piece of cotton or cloth. If it comes out without traces of blood or menstrual discharge, this may indicate that menstruation has ended.

A woman should consider her usual menstrual pattern and the condition of the discharge before deciding that she has become pure.

It is important not to rush, because some women continue to experience light yellow or brown discharge before menstruation has completely ended.

The Method of Ghusl After Menstruation

Once menstruation has ended and the sign of purity has appeared, a woman should perform ghusl before resuming prayers and other acts of worship that require ritual purity.

The basic method of ghusl after menstruation is the same as ghusl after major ritual impurity (janabah). Imam al-Shafi‘i (may Allah have mercy on him) also explained that there is no fundamental difference between the two forms of ghusl.

(Al-Umm, 1/102; Al-Tamhid, 22/98)

During ghusl, water must reach the entire body, leaving no part dry.

Must a Woman Untie Her Hair for Ghusl After Menstruation?

Scholars have discussed whether a woman must untie her braided or tightly bound hair when performing ghusl. According to a recognised view, untying the hair is not obligatory if the water can reach the roots.

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ whether she needed to undo her tightly braided hair for ghusl after janabah.

He replied:

“No. It is sufficient for you to pour three handfuls of water over your head and then pour water over your entire body, and you will become pure.”

(Sahih Muslim, 330; Sunan Abi Dawud, 255; Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, 105)

This Hadith indicates that untying braided hair is not necessary for ghusl, provided that water reaches the roots of the hair.

However, if a substance prevents water from reaching the roots of the hair or the skin, it must be removed. If a substance is light and does not prevent water from reaching the required area, removing it is not necessary for this reason alone.

Yellow or Brown Discharge Before Menstruation

Some women notice yellow, brown, or muddy-coloured discharge before their menstrual bleeding begins. Its ruling depends on the woman’s usual cycle and the continuity and timing of the discharge.

If the discharge is connected to the beginning of menstruation and appears as part of the menstrual episode, it may be counted as menstruation.

Similarly, if yellow or brown discharge appears at the end of the menstrual period before the woman has established that she is pure, it may be considered part of the same menstrual episode.

The women used to send cotton containing traces of yellowish menstrual discharge to Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). She would advise them not to hurry until the white discharge appeared.

(Muwatta Imam Malik; Sahih al-Bukhari)

This indicates that the end of menstruation should not be determined merely by looking at the colour of the discharge. Its timing, continuity, and the signs of purity must also be considered.

Yellow or Brown Discharge After Purity

The ruling is different when a woman has clearly become pure, has performed ghusl, and has resumed prayer and fasting, but later notices yellow or brown discharge.

A woman should not automatically treat this later discharge as menstruation merely because of its colour.

Umm ‘Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported:

“We did not consider brownish or yellowish discharge after purity to be anything significant.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari, 326)

This Hadith indicates that yellow or brown discharge appearing after purity has been established is not counted as menstruation merely on account of its colour. A woman should therefore not abandon prayer or fasting solely because of such discharge.

However, if she is unsure whether purity was actually established, or whether the discharge is connected to the same menstrual episode, she should not make a decision based on colour alone.

An Important Note: Menstrual Rulings Depend on the Individual Circumstances

Menstrual rulings can sometimes be more complicated than they first appear. A woman’s usual cycle, the duration and continuity of bleeding, intervals of dryness, and changes in her normal pattern may all affect the ruling.

For this reason, it is not always possible to determine whether bleeding is menstruation or irregular bleeding (istihadah) simply by looking at its colour.

If bleeding continues for an unusually long period, stops and then returns, or differs significantly from a woman’s normal pattern, the relevant details must be considered together.

In complicated cases, a woman should explain her usual cycle and the exact pattern of bleeding to a qualified scholar or knowledgeable female religious adviser. A general article cannot provide a definitive ruling for every individual situation.

Conclusion

Menstruation does not separate a woman from normal family and social life. Eating and drinking with her, sitting together, washing her husband’s head, combing his hair, and maintaining ordinary domestic relationships are permissible.

Physical intimacy between spouses is also permissible in forms other than vaginal intercourse. However, scholars differ regarding direct contact between the navel and knees without a covering. Using a cloth as a barrier is a more cautious approach.

A menstruating woman may remember Allah, make supplications, and seek Islamic knowledge. She may also enter ihram and perform most of the rites of Hajj or ‘Umrah, but she must postpone Tawaf until she becomes pure.

The end of menstruation may be recognised through the appearance of white discharge or complete dryness. Once purity is established, a woman should perform ghusl before resuming prayer and other acts of worship that require ritual purity.

Yellow or brown discharge appearing after confirmed purity is not automatically considered menstruation, as indicated by the narration of Umm ‘Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her).

Because menstrual rulings can depend on a woman’s previous habits, the duration of bleeding, and the continuity of discharge, complicated cases should be referred to a qualified scholar rather than decided on the basis of a general article alone.
