Nifas (Postpartum Bleeding) in Islam: Rules, Duration, Prayer, Fasting, and Other Important Rulings
Introduction
Islam provides guidance for every stage of a person's life, including pregnancy, childbirth, and the period after delivery. After giving birth, a woman needs time to recover physically and regain her strength. During this period, she may experience bleeding from the uterus. In Islamic terminology, this bleeding is known as Nifas (postpartum bleeding).
There are specific Islamic rulings related to Nifas, including prayer, fasting, marital relations, and other acts of worship. Questions may also arise when the bleeding stops before forty days or continues beyond that period. Another important issue is what happens when a pregnancy ends in a miscarriage. Does the bleeding after a miscarriage count as Nifas, or does it have a different ruling?
Understanding these matters helps Muslim women follow Islamic teachings correctly and gives their families a clearer understanding of their responsibilities during this important period.
This article explains the meaning of Nifas, its duration, the acts that are restricted during this period, the rulings concerning miscarriage, and the relevant Islamic guidance in simple and easy-to-understand English.
1. What Is Nifas in Islam?
In Islamic terminology, Nifas is the bleeding associated with childbirth. It generally refers to the blood that comes from the uterus after a woman gives birth.
Islamic scholars have discussed Nifas in detail in their books of Islamic jurisprudence. The definition also becomes important when a pregnancy ends before the expected time of delivery, because not every type of bleeding after a miscarriage is automatically classified as Nifas.
In some cases, the bleeding may be considered Nifas, while in others it may be classified as Istihada, which means irregular or non-menstrual bleeding. The ruling depends on the circumstances and the stage of pregnancy
Imam al-Buhuti, a well-known Hanbali scholar, discusses the definition of Nifas in Kashshaf al-Qina (1/218).
Understanding this distinction is important because the Islamic rulings related to prayer, fasting, and marital relations depend on the classification of the bleeding.
Menstruation in Islam: Part 1 | Rulings, Age, Duration & Basic Fiqh Read Here
2. How Long Does Nifas Last?
One of the most common questions after childbirth is how long a woman must wait before she can resume her regular acts of worship.
According to the Hanbali school and many scholars, Nifas has no fixed minimum duration, while its maximum duration is forty days.
This means that postpartum bleeding does not have to continue for the entire forty-day period. Some women may experience bleeding for only a few days, while others may experience it for several weeks.
Evidence from Hadith
Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported:
During the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), women experiencing postpartum bleeding would refrain from prayer for forty days after childbirth.
This narration is commonly cited in discussions about the duration of Nifas. However, it should not be understood to mean that every woman must remain in the state of Nifas for forty days, even if her bleeding stops earlier.
What If the Bleeding Stops Before Forty Days?
If the bleeding stops before forty days and the woman is certain that she has become ritually pure, she should perform Ghusl, the ritual bath, and resume her prayers.
If this happens during Ramadan, she should also begin fasting, provided she is otherwise able to fast and no other valid excuse prevents her from doing so.
For example, if a woman gives birth and her bleeding stops after twelve days, she does not need to wait until the fortieth day. Once she is certain that the bleeding has ended and she has become pure, she should perform Ghusl and resume her acts of worship.
The same principle applies if the bleeding stops after ten days, twenty days, or any other period shorter than forty days.
Imam al-Tirmidhi reported that scholars held that a woman experiencing Nifas should refrain from prayer during the bleeding, but if she becomes pure before forty days, she should perform Ghusl and pray.
Reference: Jami' al-Tirmidhi, Book of Purification, Hadith 139.
What If the Bleeding Continues Beyond Forty Days?
If bleeding continues after forty days, its ruling requires further examination.
According to the Hanafi school and many other scholars, the maximum duration of Nifas is forty days. However, this does not mean that every drop of blood after the fortieth day must automatically be classified as Istihada.
The woman's previous menstrual pattern, the nature of the bleeding, and the relevant rules of her school of Islamic jurisprudence must be considered.
For example, if the bleeding continues after forty days and coincides with her usual menstrual period, it may be classified as menstruation (Hayd), provided the conditions of Hayd are met. If it does not qualify as menstruation, it may be classified as Istihada.
A woman in this situation should explain her circumstances to a qualified scholar or a reliable Islamic fatwa service rather than making a decision based only on the number of days.
Shaykh Shams al-Haqq al-Azimabadi also discussed the view that the maximum duration of Nifas is forty days and that it has no fixed minimum duration.
Reference: Awn al-Ma'bud, 1/386.
Important note: The basic forty-day rule is widely discussed in Islamic jurisprudence, but the detailed rulings concerning bleeding after forty days can differ according to the school of thought and the woman's circumstances.

3. Which Acts Are Restricted During Nifas?
Many of the rulings that apply to a woman during menstruation also apply during Nifas.
Imam al-Nawawi explains that Nifas shares many of the same rulings as menstruation, including restrictions related to certain acts of worship and marital relations.
Reference: Al-Majmu' Sharh al-Muhadhdhab, 2/477.
The following sections explain the main issues in simple terms.
3.1. Prayer During Nifas
A woman experiencing Nifas does not perform the obligatory or voluntary prayers during the period of postpartum bleeding.
When the bleeding ends and she becomes ritually pure, she should perform Ghusl and resume her prayers.
There is no need to wait for forty days if the bleeding stops earlier.
Do missed prayers need to be made up?
No. A woman does not have to make up the prayers she missed during menstruation or Nifas.
This is an established Islamic ruling and should not be confused with the ruling concerning missed Ramadan fasts.
3.2. Fasting During Nifas
A woman experiencing Nifas does not fast during the bleeding period, including during Ramadan.
If Ramadan begins while she is still experiencing postpartum bleeding, she should not perform the fasts during that period.
However, she must make up the obligatory Ramadan fasts she missed after Ramadan, when she is able to do so.
Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that women were instructed to make up missed fasts but were not instructed to make up missed prayers.
Reference: Sahih Muslim, Hadith 335.
Although this narration specifically discusses menstruation, the same basic distinction between prayer and fasting applies to Nifas.
3.3. Reciting the Quran and Touching the Mushaf
The rulings concerning Quran recitation during Nifas involve scholarly differences.
According to the Hanafi school and the majority of classical jurists, a woman in Nifas does not recite the Quran as ordinary recitation and does not directly touch the physical Mushaf without the required purification.
However, certain matters, such as supplications, remembrance of Allah, and reciting Quranic expressions with the intention of making a supplication rather than reciting the Quran, may have different rulings.
Some scholars permit a woman experiencing menstruation or Nifas to recite the Quran verbally, particularly when there is a need, such as teaching, learning, or fear of forgetting what she has memorized.
For this reason, a woman should follow the guidance of a qualified scholar according to the school of thought she follows.
Reading the Quran on a mobile phone is also a separate issue from directly touching a physical Mushaf. The two should not automatically be treated as identical.
3.4. Staying in the Mosque
The ruling concerning a woman in Nifas remaining inside a mosque is discussed in Islamic jurisprudence.
According to the majority of classical scholars, a woman experiencing menstruation or Nifas should not remain inside the mosque. Certain circumstances, such as passing through when necessary, have separate details.
However, she can remember Allah, make supplications, send blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and engage in other permissible forms of remembrance at home.
Nifas does not prevent a woman from making Dua or maintaining her connection with Allah.
3.5. Marital Relations During Nifas
Sexual intercourse through the vagina is prohibited while a woman is experiencing Nifas.
Allah says in the Quran:
“And they ask you about menstruation. Say, ‘It is harm, so keep away from wives during menstruation.’”
This verse directly discusses menstruation. Islamic scholars also apply the relevant prohibition of intercourse to Nifas.
A husband and wife should therefore avoid vaginal intercourse until the bleeding has ended and the woman has become ritually pure. Once she is pure and has performed Ghusl, marital intercourse becomes permissible.
This prohibition does not mean that every form of affection between husband and wife is forbidden. Other forms of closeness may be permissible, provided that the limits established by Islamic teachings are observed.
Both spouses should approach this matter with understanding, respect, and consideration for the woman's physical recovery after childbirth.
Part 4: Permissible Matters During Menstruation, Signs of Purity, and the Method of Ghusl Read here
3.6. Tawaf and Other Acts of Worship
A woman experiencing Nifas does not perform Tawaf around the Ka'bah while she remains in this state.
If Nifas occurs during Hajj or Umrah, the situation may require specific guidance because the rules concerning Tawaf, other rites, and travel arrangements can vary according to the circumstances.
However, she can continue making Dua, remembering Allah, and performing other permissible acts of worship.
Women who experience Nifas during Hajj or Umrah should seek qualified religious guidance about how to complete their rites correctly.
4. What Is the Ruling on Bleeding After a Miscarriage?
A miscarriage can raise important questions about prayer, fasting, and marital relations.
The key question is whether the bleeding after the pregnancy ends should be classified as Nifas, menstruation, or Istihada.
The answer depends on the circumstances, including the stage of pregnancy and whether the developing fetus had recognizable human features.
Not every miscarriage results in Nifas, and not every type of bleeding following a miscarriage has the same Islamic ruling.
Case One: An Early Miscarriage Before Human Features Appear
If a pregnancy ends at an early stage, before recognizable human features have developed, the resulting bleeding is not automatically classified as Nifas.
Depending on the circumstances, it may be classified as Istihada or another type of bleeding.
If it is classified as Istihada, the woman should continue praying and fasting, provided that no other valid excuse applies. Marital intercourse is also permissible in principle in this situation, subject to the relevant rules.
However, if the bleeding independently meets the conditions for menstruation, it may be classified as Hayd instead.
Therefore, the ruling cannot always be determined by the fact that a miscarriage occurred.
Case Two: A Miscarriage After Human Features Have Developed
If the pregnancy has reached a stage at which recognizable human features, such as the head, hands, or feet, have developed, many scholars classify the bleeding following the miscarriage as Nifas.
In this situation, the woman follows the rulings of Nifas. She does not pray or fast during the period of Nifas, and vaginal intercourse is prohibited until she becomes ritually pure.
When the bleeding ends and she becomes pure, she should perform Ghusl and resume her acts of worship.
The actual determination may require medical information about the pregnancy and the development of the fetus.
Case Three: The Fetal Features Are Unclear
Sometimes a pregnancy ends at a stage when it is difficult to determine whether recognizable human features had developed.
In such cases, the woman should not rely only on an approximate number of days to decide the ruling.
The stage of pregnancy, medical findings, and the nature of the pregnancy tissue may all be relevant. A qualified scholar may need to review this information before determining whether the bleeding is Nifas or Istihada.
Medical professionals can help establish the stage of development, while a qualified Islamic scholar can explain how the relevant jurisprudential rules apply.
Hadith About the Development of the Fetus
Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated a hadith in which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) described stages of human development in the womb.
References: Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 3208; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2643.
Scholars have discussed this narration when explaining fetal development and the rulings concerning miscarriage.
However, this hadith should not be used by itself to make a definitive ruling about every miscarriage. The relevant legal details, the development of the fetus, and the explanations of qualified scholars must also be considered.
Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen discussed the importance of recognizable fetal features when explaining the rulings concerning bleeding after miscarriage.
Reference: Al-Sharh al-Mumti', 1/444.
Shaykh Abdul Aziz ibn Baz also explained that when a miscarried fetus has developed recognizable human features, the bleeding may be treated as Nifas. If the pregnancy ends before those features become apparent, the ruling may be different.
Reference: Fatawa Islamiyyah, 1/243.
Important clarification: The exact stage at which fetal features become recognizable should not be reduced to a single rigid rule based only on the number of days. Medical dating, fetal development, and differences in scholarly interpretation must be considered.
If a woman experiences a miscarriage, she should consult a qualified scholar and provide the available medical information before deciding whether she must stop praying and fasting.

5. Is There an Expiation for Sexual Intercourse During Nifas?
Sexual intercourse through the vagina during Nifas is prohibited. Both spouses should respect this ruling and avoid intercourse until the bleeding has ended and the woman has become ritually pure.
If intercourse occurs during Nifas, the question of repentance and expiation may arise.
Islamic scholars have discussed whether an expiation is required for intercourse during menstruation and have differed on the details of this ruling. Similar discussions apply to Nifas.
Ibn Qudamah explains that the ruling concerning expiation for intercourse during Nifas is treated in a similar way to the ruling concerning menstruation.
Reference: Al-Mughni, 1/419.
However, scholars do not universally agree that the same specific financial expiation is obligatory in every case.
For this reason, it would be inaccurate to claim that every person who commits this act must pay one particular amount or provide a fixed quantity of charity according to all schools of Islamic jurisprudence.
If this happens, the spouses should sincerely repent to Allah, avoid repeating the act, and consult a qualified scholar about whether any specific expiation applies according to their school of thought.
The important point is that the prohibition should be taken seriously and that the spouses should learn the relevant rulings before acting.
6. Practical Guidance for Women Experiencing Nifas
The following points summarize some of the most important practical rulings.
1. Do not wait for forty days if the bleeding stops earlier. If the bleeding has ended and ritual purity is established, perform Ghusl and resume prayer.
2. Remember the difference between prayer and fasting. Missed prayers during Nifas do not have to be made up, but missed obligatory Ramadan fasts must be made up later.
3. Seek guidance if bleeding continues beyond forty days. The ruling may depend on previous menstrual habits, the type of bleeding, and the school of jurisprudence being followed.
4. Do not assume that all bleeding after miscarriage is Nifas. The stage of pregnancy and the development of the fetus may affect the ruling.
5. Both spouses should understand the restrictions on intercourse. Vaginal intercourse is prohibited during Nifas. Respecting this ruling is a shared responsibility.
6. Take physical recovery seriously. Childbirth and miscarriage can involve medical complications. Very heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fever, dizziness, or fainting may indicate a medical emergency. In such cases, seek immediate medical attention.
Religious guidance and medical care serve different purposes. A scholar can clarify the Islamic ruling, while a healthcare professional can assess the woman's physical condition.

7. Frequently Asked Questions About Nifas
Can a woman pray if her bleeding stops after ten days?
Yes. If the bleeding has genuinely stopped and she has become ritually pure, she should perform Ghusl and resume prayer. She does not need to wait until forty days.
Does a woman have to make up prayers missed during Nifas?
No. Prayers missed during Nifas do not have to be made up.
Does she have to make up Ramadan fasts missed during Nifas?
Yes. She must make up the obligatory Ramadan fasts she missed because of Nifas.
Is every type of bleeding after miscarriage considered Nifas?
No. The ruling depends on the stage of pregnancy, whether recognizable human features had developed, and the relevant jurisprudential details. Some bleeding may be classified as Istihada or menstruation instead.
What if the bleeding continues after forty days?
The woman should seek a specific ruling based on her previous menstrual pattern, the nature of the bleeding, and her school of Islamic jurisprudence. Bleeding after forty days should not automatically be classified as either Nifas or Istihada without considering these details.
Can a woman make Dua and remember Allah during Nifas?
Yes. She can make Dua, engage in Dhikr, send blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and seek forgiveness from Allah.
Is marital intercourse allowed as soon as the bleeding stops?
Once the woman has become ritually pure and has performed the required Ghusl, intercourse becomes permissible. The spouses should make sure that the bleeding has actually ended and that the relevant conditions of purity have been met.
Conclusion
Nifas is the bleeding associated with childbirth, and Islamic teachings provide specific guidance for women during this period.
According to the Hanafi school and many other scholars, the maximum duration of Nifas is forty days, while its minimum duration is not fixed. If the bleeding stops before forty days and the woman becomes ritually pure, she should perform Ghusl and resume her prayers and fasting when applicable.
During Nifas, a woman does not pray or fast, although she must make up the obligatory Ramadan fasts she misses. Vaginal intercourse is also prohibited until she becomes ritually pure.
Bleeding after miscarriage requires particular care because its classification may depend on fetal development and the relevant rules of Islamic jurisprudence. Similarly, bleeding that continues beyond forty days and the question of expiation for intercourse during Nifas may require individual guidance.
The purpose of learning these rulings is not to make religious practice difficult, but to understand Allah's guidance and apply it correctly. When a situation is unclear, consulting a qualified scholar is the most reliable way to determine the appropriate ruling.
