Purification and cleanliness hold fundamental importance in Islam. Physical purification is essential for acts of worship such as Salah (prayer). Therefore, Islamic law has prescribed specific methods for Wudu (ablution), Ghusl (ritual bath), and Tayammum (dry purification) when water is unavailable or cannot be used for a valid reason.
Wudu is not merely the washing of a few parts of the body. It is an act of worship through which a Muslim prepares himself or herself for prayer by attaining physical purification. Similarly, Ghusl is a means of attaining major purification in circumstances such as Janabah, menstruation, and postnatal bleeding. When water is unavailable or there is a valid Islamic excuse for not using it, Tayammum serves as an alternative means of purification.
What Is Wudu?
Wudu is the prescribed purification involving the washing of specific parts of the body with water and wiping the head. A Muslim performs Wudu for Salah, Tawaf, and certain other acts of worship.
Allah Almighty says in the Qur’an:
“O you who believe! When you rise for prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, wipe your heads, and wash your feet up to the ankles.”
(Surah Al-Ma’idah: 6)This verse mentions the fundamental parts involved in Wudu.
Supplication at the Beginning of Wudu
It is recommended to begin Wudu by saying:
“In the name of Allah.”
Beginning Wudu with the name of Allah is supported by narrations concerning the recitation of the Basmala.
The longer wording sometimes mentioned:
should not be presented as an established Sunnah of Wudu without a reliable proof. Therefore, simply saying Bismillah is sufficient.
The intention for Wudu is made in the heart. It is not necessary to pronounce a specific Arabic formula for the intention.

Supplication During Wudu
Various specific supplications for washing each individual part of Wudu are commonly circulated among people. However, many of these supplications are not authentically established from the Prophet ﷺ.
The following supplication is mentioned in some narrations:
“O Allah, forgive my sins, grant spaciousness in my home, and bless me in my provision.”
This supplication has been reported in narrations attributed to Abu Musa Al-Ash‘ari It has also been mentioned in collections such as Sunan al-Nasa’i, while scholars have differed regarding the authenticity of the narration.
Therefore, it is better to mention its status with appropriate caution rather than presenting it as an unquestionably authentic Sunnah.
Supplication After Wudu
After completing Wudu, the following supplication is established in authentic Hadith:
“I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, alone without any partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.”
The following supplication is also reported:
“O Allah, make me among those who constantly repent and make me among those who purify themselves.”
The virtue of reciting the testimony of faith after Wudu is established in Sahih Muslim, while the wording Allahumma aj‘alni min at-tawwabeena waj‘alni min al-mutatahhireen has also been reported in other narrations.
This supplication also reminds us that purification in Islam is not limited to physical cleanliness. Purification of the heart and deeds is equally important.

The Four Obligatory Acts of Wudu
According to the Hanafi school of Islamic jurisprudence, there are four obligatory acts (Fara’id) in Wudu. If any one of these obligatory acts is left out, the Wudu is not valid.
1. Washing the Entire Face
The entire face must be washed, from the normal hairline of the forehead to below the chin, and from one earlobe to the other.
Simply wetting the face is not sufficient. Water must reach the entire area that is required to be washed.
2. Washing Both Arms Including the Elbows
Both arms must be washed from the fingertips up to and including the elbows.
The elbows are included in the area that must be washed and should not be left dry.
3. Wiping at Least One-Fourth of the Head
According to the Hanafi school, wiping at least one-fourth of the head is obligatory.
The better and Sunnah method is to wipe the entire head once.
4. Washing Both Feet Including the Ankles
Both feet must be washed up to and including the ankles.
Particular attention should be given to the spaces between the toes so that no required area remains dry.
Sunnahs of Wudu
There can be slight differences in the number and classification of the Sunnahs of Wudu in Hanafi books of jurisprudence. The following are twelve important Sunnahs presented in a simple manner.
1. Making the Intention
Intend in the heart to attain purification and seek the pleasure of Allah Almighty.
2. Saying Bismillah
Begin Wudu by saying:
3. Washing the Hands Up to the Wrists
Wash both hands up to the wrists at the beginning of Wudu.
4. Using Miswak
Using a Miswak during Wudu is a Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.
It cleans the mouth and also allows a Muslim to follow the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.
5. Rinsing the Mouth
Put water into the mouth and rinse it properly, generally three times.
6. Cleaning the Nose
Put water into the nose and clean it, generally three times.
7. Washing the Limbs Three Times
The face, arms, and feet are generally washed three times. The head, however, is wiped once.
8. Performing Khilal of the Fingers
Pass water between the fingers of the hands and feet to ensure that the required areas are properly reached.
9. Performing Khilal of the Beard
For a person with a thick beard, passing the fingers through the beard to ensure proper purification is included among the Sunnah practices.
10. Washing the Limbs Consecutively
The parts of Wudu should be washed consecutively without unnecessary long interruptions.
11. Wiping the Entire Head
According to the Hanafi school, wiping at least one-fourth of the head is obligatory, while wiping the entire head once is Sunnah.
12. Maintaining the Order
The parts of Wudu should be performed in the recognized order.

Things That Break Wudu
The things that invalidate Wudu are known as Nawaqid al-Wudu.
According to the Hanafi school, some important invalidators of Wudu include the following:
1. Passing Urine, Stool, or Wind
Passing urine, stool, or wind breaks Wudu.
Similarly, the discharge of something from the front or back private parts that is considered an invalidator of Wudu requires Wudu to be performed again.
2. Vomiting a Mouthful
According to the Hanafi school, if a person vomits enough to be considered a mouthful of vomit, Wudu is invalidated.
3. Flowing Blood or Pus
If blood or pus comes from a wound and flows beyond its point of emergence, Wudu is invalidated according to the Hanafi school.
Simply seeing a small amount of blood is not necessarily sufficient; flowing is considered in this ruling.
4. Loss of Consciousness
Becoming unconscious invalidates Wudu.
5. Loss of Reason
Insanity or a condition in which a person loses rational awareness invalidates Wudu.
6. Intoxication
Becoming intoxicated to the extent that one's reason and awareness are affected invalidates Wudu.
7. Sleep in Which Physical Control Is Lost
Sleeping in a position where a person loses control of the body, such as lying down, invalidates Wudu.
If a person sleeps while sitting firmly in a position where the body remains secure and controlled, the ruling can be different.
8. Loud Laughter During Salah
According to the Hanafi school, if an adult laughs loudly during a prayer that contains Ruku‘ and Sujud, both the prayer and Wudu are invalidated.
Smiling or laughing in a manner that does not constitute loud laughter has a different ruling.
What Is Ghusl?
Ghusl means washing the entire body with water in a prescribed manner.
In Islam, Ghusl is not merely a means of physical cleanliness. In certain circumstances, it is required to attain major ritual purification.
According to the Hanafi school, three basic acts are obligatory for a valid obligatory Ghusl:
- Rinsing the mouth.
- Putting water into the nose.
- Pouring water over the entire body so that no required part remains dry.
Soap or shampoo is not obligatory for Ghusl. The essential requirement is that water reaches the entire body.
The Three Obligatory Acts of Ghusl
1. Rinsing the Mouth
Water must reach the inside of the mouth.
2. Putting Water into the Nose
Water must reach inside the nose.
3. Washing the Entire Body
Water must reach the entire body from the head to the feet.
Special attention should be given to the roots of the hair, the navel, armpits, spaces between the fingers and toes, and other areas where water may not easily reach.

When Does Ghusl Become Obligatory?
According to the Hanafi school, the principal causes requiring Ghusl include the following:
1. Emission of Semen with Sexual Desire
If semen is discharged with sexual desire, Ghusl becomes obligatory, whether this occurs while awake or through a wet dream.
Simply seeing a dream does not make Ghusl obligatory unless there is evidence of the discharge of semen.
2. Sexual Intercourse
If penetration occurs between a husband and wife, Ghusl becomes obligatory even if ejaculation does not occur.
3. End of Menstruation
After menstruation ends, a woman must perform Ghusl before returning to acts of worship requiring major purification.
4. End of Postnatal Bleeding
After postnatal bleeding ends, Ghusl becomes obligatory.
Washing the Deceased
Washing the body of a deceased Muslim is Fard Kifayah upon the Muslim community.
This means that if some Muslims fulfill this responsibility, the obligation is lifted from the others.
The Ghusl of a deceased person has its own specific rules and should not simply be treated as identical to the Ghusl performed by a living person after Janabah.
What Is Tayammum?
When water is unavailable, or using water would cause genuine harm, or there is a valid Islamic reason preventing the use of water, Islam permits Tayammum as an alternative means of purification.
Tayammum demonstrates the ease and mercy present in Islamic law.
Allah Almighty says:
“Then, if you do not find water, perform Tayammum with clean earth.”
(Surah Al-Ma’idah: 6)Tayammum can serve as a substitute for Wudu or Ghusl when a valid Islamic excuse exists.
When Is Tayammum Permitted?
Tayammum may be permitted in situations such as:
Water is completely unavailable.
Water is available but cannot reasonably be reached.
Using water creates a genuine fear that an illness will worsen.
Using water would cause recognized harm.
There is a valid circumstance in which water must be preserved for an essential need such as drinking.
In the case of illness, a mere insignificant fear is not sufficient. There should be a reasonable concern of harm recognized by Islamic law.

Obligatory Acts and Method of Tayammum
According to the Hanafi method presented here, after making the intention, the hands are placed on clean earth or an appropriate substance belonging to the category of earth, then the face is wiped. The hands are then placed on the earth again and both arms are wiped up to and including the elbows.
First Step: Intention
Make the intention in the heart that you are performing Tayammum for purification or for an act of worship such as Salah.
The place of intention is the heart. It is not necessary to pronounce a specific formula in Arabic.
Second Step: Wiping the Face
Strike both hands on clean earth or an appropriate substance from the category of earth. Remove excess dust if necessary and wipe the entire face.
No required part of the face should remain unwiped.
Third Step: Wiping Both Arms
Strike both hands on the earth again. Then wipe one arm from the fingertips up to and including the elbow, followed by the other arm.
Tayammum does not require the entire body to be rubbed with earth. In place of Wudu or Ghusl, the face and hands/arms are wiped according to the applicable method.
Is There a Difference Between Tayammum for Wudu and Ghusl?
The basic method of Tayammum is the same whether it is being performed as a substitute for Wudu or Ghusl.
If a person is required to perform Ghusl but cannot use water due to a valid Islamic excuse, Tayammum may be performed instead.
Similarly, if a person's Wudu has been invalidated and water is unavailable or there is a valid excuse preventing its use, Tayammum may be performed instead.
In Tayammum, the face and arms are wiped; the entire body does not need to be rubbed with earth.
When Does Tayammum End?
Tayammum is a temporary means of purification. When the excuse for which Tayammum was performed comes to an end, its ruling also comes to an end.
For example, if a person performs Tayammum because water was unavailable and later finds water before the relevant prayer, with no valid excuse preventing its use, then water should be used for subsequent purification.
Similarly, things that invalidate Wudu also invalidate the state of purification obtained through Tayammum for Wudu.

Difference Between Wudu, Ghusl and Tayammum
Wudu:
Purification from minor ritual impurity by washing specific parts of the body with water and wiping the head.
Ghusl:
Purification from major ritual impurity by washing the entire body with water in the prescribed manner.
Tayammum:
An alternative form of purification performed with clean earth or a substance from the category of earth when water is unavailable or there is a valid Islamic excuse preventing its use.
Important Etiquettes of Purification
Although fulfilling the obligatory acts of Wudu and Ghusl is sufficient for validity, following the complete and proper method is better.
Water should not be wasted during Wudu. The Prophet ﷺ taught moderation in the use of water.
The limbs should be washed properly, while unnecessary extravagance should be avoided.
Particular attention should be paid to the fingers, toes, beard, and other areas where water may not easily reach.
The same principle applies to Ghusl: water must reach the entire body, but unnecessary excessive use of water should be avoided.
Purification: From Physical Cleanliness to Purification of the Heart
The Islamic concept of purification is not limited to physical cleanliness.
During Wudu, a Muslim washes the face, hands, and feet and wipes the head in preparation for Salah. Alongside this physical purification, a Muslim should also strive for purification of the heart and correction of deeds.
This is reflected in the supplication:
“O Allah, make me among those who constantly repent and make me among those who purify themselves.”
These words remind a Muslim that physical purification should be accompanied by inner purification and repentance.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
There are several common misunderstandings regarding Wudu and purification.
First, it is important to understand that every popular supplication is not necessarily a Hadith. In particular, specific supplications assigned to each individual part of Wudu should not be attributed definitively to the Prophet ﷺ without verifying their authenticity.
Second, a distinction should be made between obligatory acts and Sunnahs. If an obligatory act is omitted, Wudu is not valid. If a Sunnah is omitted, Wudu generally remains valid, although the person misses the reward and perfection associated with that Sunnah.
Third, there are differences in certain detailed matters among the Islamic schools of jurisprudence. Therefore, when presenting a specific method, it is useful to clarify which school of jurisprudence the ruling follows.
Fourth, the purpose of washing during Wudu is not merely to make the body wet. The prescribed parts must be washed according to the requirements of Islamic purification.
Fifth, during Ghusl, care must be taken so that no required part of the body remains dry.
Summary
Wudu is an important act of worship in the daily life of a Muslim. Attaining purification for Salah is an essential part of Islamic practice.
According to the Hanafi school, the four obligatory acts of Wudu are:
- Washing the entire face.
- Washing both arms including the elbows.
- Wiping at least one-fourth of the head.
- Washing both feet including the ankles.
The three obligatory acts of Ghusl are:
- Rinsing the mouth.
- Putting water into the nose.
- Pouring water over the entire body.
When water is unavailable or there is a valid Islamic excuse preventing its use, Tayammum is permitted. According to the Hanafi method presented above, it involves the intention followed by wiping the face and both arms.
A Muslim should begin Wudu by saying Bismillah and, after completing Wudu, recite the testimony of faith and the established supplications.
The purpose of purification is not only to prepare physically for Salah. It also reminds a Muslim of cleanliness, discipline, remembrance of Allah, repentance, and the purification of the heart.
May Allah grant us both physical and spiritual purity, enable us to perform Wudu and Ghusl correctly, and make us among those who constantly repent and purify themselves. Ameen.
