Rulings and Issues Regarding Prayer and Fasting During Menstruation

Introduction

Menstruation is a natural condition inherent to women, but there are many essential Islamic rulings associated with it that every woman needs to understand. In particular, regarding prayer (Salah) and fasting (Sawm), it is crucial to know which acts of worship cannot be performed during menstruation, which ones must be made up (Qada) after becoming pure, and what the ruling is if a woman becomes pure right before dawn (Fajr) during Ramadan.

This article details these rulings in light of authentic Prophetic traditions (Ahadith) and the explanations of respected scholars. Where differences of opinion exist among jurists, these differences have been explicitly highlighted.

1. Ruling on Bleeding During Pregnancy

Scholars hold differing opinions regarding a pregnant woman who experiences bleeding. Generally, menstruation stops during pregnancy. It is narrated from Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) that women historically recognized the cessation of periods as a primary sign of pregnancy.

Sheikh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Othaimeen (may Allah have mercy on him) emphasized that the ruling depends heavily on the nature of the blood and the woman's standard monthly routine. According to his detailed explanation:

Case 1: Bleeding That Matches Regular Menstruation

If a pregnant woman experiences bleeding that matches her usual monthly cycle in terms of timing, flow, and physical characteristics, then according to the stance stated by Sheikh Ibn Othaimeen, it can be considered menstruation. Under this view, she follows all standard rulings for menstruating women.

This opinion is also narrated from Imam Malik, Imam al-Shafi’i, and Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on them), who held that if bleeding during pregnancy mirrors known menstrual characteristics, it can be classified as menstruation.

Case 2: Bleeding Due to Unusual Circumstances

If the bleeding is caused by an accident, lifting something heavy, a fall, or any other unusual cause, and does not resemble her normal monthly period, it is treated as abnormal bleeding (Istihadah or accidental discharge) rather than menstruation. In this situation, the woman does not stop praying or fasting.

Case 3: Bleeding Resuming After Ceasing Due to Pregnancy

If a woman's period had stopped due to pregnancy and then blood appears again, the ruling is determined by evaluating the quality of the blood, its duration, and her prior cycle history.

If a woman is uncertain whether the blood is menstrual or not, she should not stop praying based on mere doubt. In such cases, she should detail her usual cycle pattern and current condition to a qualified scholar or Dar al-Ifta to receive a proper ruling.

Important Clarification: Bleeding during pregnancy may also require a medical check-up. Identifying the medical cause of bleeding and determining its Islamic ruling are two distinct matters. Therefore, alongside medical consultation, one should seek guidance from scholars for complex religious scenarios.

Part 1: Rulings Regarding Menstruation and Prayer (Salah)

2. Praying During Menstruation

A woman must not perform prayer while menstruating. This ruling is firmly established by authentic Ahadith.

Fatimah bint Abi Hubaish (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

"When your period comes, abandon the prayer; and when it ends, perform a ritual bath (Ghusl) and pray."

Sahih al-Bukhari: 320; Sahih Muslim: 333.

This narration establishes that a woman does not pray during menstruation. Once her period ends and she becomes pure, she takes a full ritual bath (Ghusl) and resumes her prayers.

3. No Making Up for Missed Prayers

The prayers that a woman misses during her period do not need to be made up (Qada) after she becomes pure.

Mu'adhah (may Allah have mercy on her) narrated that she asked Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): "Does a menstruating woman make up her missed prayers?" Aisha replied:

"Are you a Haruriya (a radical group)? During the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), we used to get our periods, and we were commanded to make up our missed fasts, but we were not commanded to make up our missed prayers."

Sahih al-Bukhari: 321; Sahih Muslim: 335.

Imam al-Tirmidhi (may Allah have mercy on him) stated that there is no disagreement among jurists (Fuqaha) that a woman makes up her missed fasts after purifying herself from menstruation, but she does not make up missed prayers.

Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Darussalam, Riyadh, p. 936.

Allamah Ibn Hazm (may Allah have mercy on him) also wrote that a menstruating woman does not make up the prayers missed during period days, but she must make up the missed fasts.

 Al-Muhalla, 2/175.

4. What If Menstruation Starts After a Prayer Window Begins?

If a prayer time has already started and a woman has not yet prayed when her period begins, scholars have recorded differing opinions regarding making up that specific prayer:

First Opinion

The prayer does not need to be made up, because she was allowed the flexibility to delay the prayer within its permissible timeframe.

Second Opinion

If enough time had passed within the prayer window for her to complete at least one full unit (Rak'ah) before her period started, she must make up that prayer after purifying herself.

This second opinion is based on the Prophet's (ﷺ) statement:

"Whoever catches one Rak'ah of the prayer has caught the prayer."

Sahih al-Bukhari: 580; Sahih Muslim: 607.

According to this detail, if time equivalent to one Rak'ah passed before her period started, she makes up the prayer after purification. If that much time had not passed, making it up is not obligatory under this view.

 Al-Dima' al-Tabi'iyyah li al-Nisa', p. 22.

5. What If She Becomes Pure Before a Prayer Window Ends?

If a woman becomes pure from menstruation before a prayer's time expires, and enough time remains to perform Ghusl and pray at least one Rak'ah, she must perform that prayer.

For example:

  • If she becomes pure before the time for Asr ends and enough time remains for one Rak'ah, she must pray Asr.
  • If she becomes pure before sunrise such that enough time remains to pray one Rak'ah, she must pray Fajr.

Sheikh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Othaimeen (may Allah have mercy on him) clarified that if a woman purifies herself before a prayer window closes and time for one Rak'ah remains, performing that prayer becomes obligatory.

Regarding Isha, his explanation differentiates between whether purification occurs before or after midnight. Therefore, for specific scenarios regarding Isha, one should seek personal guidance from a scholar based on their exact timing.

Allah Almighty says:

"Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers at specified times."

Surah An-Nisa, 4:103; Su'alan 'an Ahkam al-Hayd, p. 17.

6. Participation of Menstruating Women in Eid Gatherings

Umm 'Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) encouraged women to go out on the day of Eid. Menstruating women also attended the gathering; however, they stayed slightly apart from the actual prayer area while participating in the supplications and good atmosphere of the Muslim gathering.

 Sahih Muslim: 890.

This narration shows that refraining from prayer during menstruation does not mean a woman must isolate herself from every religious gathering, provided proper decorum and Islamic boundaries are maintained.

Part 2: Rulings Regarding Menstruation and Fasting (Sawm)

7. Fasting During Menstruation

It is impermissible for a woman to fast while menstruating. Fasts during Ramadan cannot be kept in this state; instead, these fasts must be made up (Qada) after menstruation ends.

Abu Sa'eed al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) went out to the prayer place on the day of Eid al-Adha or Eid al-Fitr. He passed by a group of women, encouraged them to give charity, and offered them advice. During this conversation, he (ﷺ) asked them: "Is it not true that when a woman menstruates, she neither prays nor fasts?"

 Sahih al-Bukhari: 304; Sahih Muslim: 79.

This narration explicitly establishes the rule against praying and fasting during menstruation.

8. Making Up Missed Fasts After Purification

Any fasts of Ramadan missed due to menstruation must be made up by the woman after she becomes pure. Conversely, missed prayers from this period do not require Qada.

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) stated:

"We used to get our periods during the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and we were commanded to make up our missed fasts, but we were not commanded to make up our missed prayers."

Sahih al-Bukhari: 321; Sahih Muslim: 335.

Imam al-Tirmidhi (may Allah have mercy on him) also noted that there is no scholarly disagreement that a menstruating woman must make up her fasts after purifying herself, but not her prayers.

Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Darussalam, p. 936.

Allamah Ibn Hazm (may Allah have mercy on him) similarly recorded that missed fasts during menstruation must be made up, whereas missed prayers are not.

 Al-Muhalla, 2/175.

9. Purifying Before Fajr in Ramadan and Taking Ghusl Afterward

If a woman becomes pure from menstruation before dawn (Fajr) during Ramadan, she can make the intention (Niyyah) to fast and keep the fast. Even if she takes her ritual bath (Ghusl) after Fajr has entered, her fast remains valid, provided menstruation actually ended before Fajr.

Abu Bakr ibn Abd al-Rahman (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated that he and his father visited Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). She mentioned that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would sometimes reach dawn in a state of ritual impurity (Janabah) due to marital relations (not a wet dream), and then fast without having bathed before dawn. They then visited Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), and she confirmed the exact same practice.

Sahih al-Bukhari: 1931; Sahih Muslim: 1109.

Scholars have deduced from this narration that completing Ghusl before Fajr is not a condition for the validity of a fast. The core requirement is that the condition preventing fasting (the menstrual bleeding) must have ceased before the fast's starting time (Fajr).

The same rule applies to a menstruating woman: if her bleeding stops at night and Fajr arrives before she takes a bath, her fast is valid even if Ghusl is performed after Fajr, whether delayed due to a valid excuse or otherwise.

Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) wrote that if a woman's menstrual or post-natal bleeding stops at night, and Fajr dawns before she takes Ghusl, her fast is valid and she must complete it, whether the delay in bathing was due to an excuse or not.

Sharh al-Nawawi 'ala Sahih Muslim, 7/222.

Allamah Mar'i ibn Yusuf al-Hanbali (may Allah have mercy on him) noted that if a bath becomes obligatory on someone due to Janabah or menstruation during the night and they do not bathe before Fajr, their fast is valid, though delaying Ghusl to the point of missing Fajr prayer is sinful.

 Ghayat al-Muntaha, 1/353.

Sheikh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Othaimeen (may Allah have mercy on him) also affirmed that if a menstruating or post-natal woman becomes pure before Fajr and bathes after Fajr, her fast is valid. He cited Surah al-Baqarah (2:187) along with the narrations of Aisha and Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with them).

Allah Almighty says:

"So now, enjoy relations with them and seek what Allah has decreed for you. And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread."

Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:187; Su'alan 'an Ahkam al-Hayd, p. 6; Risalah fi al-Dima' al-Tabi'iyyah li al-Nisa', p. 27.

10. Fundamental Difference Between Rulings for Prayer and Fasting

While both prayer and fasting are suspended during menstruation, the rules regarding making them up (Qada) after purification differ significantly.

Act of Worship Rule During Menstruation After Purification
Prayer (Salah) Cannot be performed NO Qada required for missed prayers
Fasting (Sawm) Cannot be performed Qada IS required for missed fasts

This fundamental distinction is clearly demonstrated in the narration of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), where she stated that they were instructed to make up missed fasts, but not missed prayers.

Sahih al-Bukhari: 321; Sahih Muslim: 335.

11. Importance of Personal Guidance in Complex Cases

In menstrual issues, a woman's regular cycle history, the exact times bleeding begins or ends, the color and texture of the discharge, pregnancy, or continuous bleeding (Istihadah) can all affect the specific ruling. Therefore, every woman's situation can be unique.

If bleeding differs from normal patterns, occurs irregularly, lasts for unusual periods, or makes it difficult to distinguish between regular menstruation and Istihadah, one should not rely solely on general articles. The specific details of one's cycle history and current condition should be explained to a qualified scholar or Dar al-Ifta to receive a tailored ruling.

Similarly, in cases of bleeding during pregnancy, medical evaluation is strongly recommended alongside religious consultation, as medical diagnosis and Islamic legal classification are distinct processes.

Note

In complex practical cases involving menstruation, a ruling should not be determined based solely on general principles or a short article. Factors such as a woman's established menstrual cycle, the exact number of bleeding days, the intervals of purity, and whether the bleeding is continuous or intermittent may all affect the ruling. In addition, some rulings differ among the various schools of Islamic jurisprudence. Therefore, if a woman is uncertain about her menstrual dates, changes in her regular cycle, continuous or irregular bleeding, or whether the bleeding should be considered Hayd or Istihadah, she should consult a qualified Islamic scholar or a reputable Dar al-Ifta and provide the relevant details of her case. Decisions regarding prayer, fasting, or other religious obligations should not be based on general information alone.
