Introduction

Prayer is one of the most important acts of worship in Islam. The five daily prayers are obligatory for Muslims, but Islam also encourages many voluntary prayers, known as Nafl prayers. These prayers are not a replacement for the obligatory prayers. Rather, they are additional acts of worship through which a person can seek the pleasure and closeness of Allah.

Among the commonly known Nafl prayers are Ishraq, Chasht (Duha), Awwabin, Tahajjud, and Salat al-Tasbih. Each prayer has its own time, number of rak‘ahs, and virtues. Some of their virtues are clearly mentioned in authentic Hadith, while the authenticity of some narrations has been discussed by scholars. Therefore, it is important to present such matters carefully.

This article gives a simple and detailed explanation of these Nafl prayers, including their times, rak‘ahs, methods, and virtues.

1. Ishraq Prayer

Ishraq is a voluntary prayer offered some time after sunrise. It should not be prayed immediately when the sun rises. Instead, a person should wait until the sun has risen sufficiently.

Generally, the time for Ishraq begins around 15 to 20 minutes after sunrise, although the exact time may vary depending on the local location and sunrise time.

At least two rak‘ahs of Ishraq can be offered. Four rak‘ahs may also be prayed.

Complete Guide to Salah | Conditions, Fard, Wajibs, Sajdah Sahw & Essential Rules Read here

Virtue of Ishraq Prayer

A narration from Anas ibn Malik (RA) mentions that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) described the virtue of Ishraq prayer and mentioned a reward equal to Hajj and Umrah. This narration is found in Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, but scholars have different views about its authenticity. Therefore, it should be mentioned with appropriate caution.

However, offering voluntary prayer after the sun has risen is permissible and rewarding. This prayer is commonly known as Ishraq.

How to Pray Ishraq

Ishraq is prayed like an ordinary two-rak‘ah Nafl prayer:

  1. Perform Wudu and face the Qiblah.
  2. Make the intention to offer two rak‘ahs of Ishraq.
  3. Begin the prayer with Takbir.
  4. Recite Thana, Ta‘awwudh, Bismillah, Surah Al-Fatihah, and another Surah.
  5. Complete the Ruku and Sajdah.
  6. Complete the second rak‘ah and end the prayer with Salam.

If you want to pray four rak‘ahs, praying them as two sets of two rak‘ahs is a simple method.

2. Chasht Prayer (Duha)

Chasht prayer is also known as Salat al-Duha. It is a voluntary prayer performed during the morning.

Its time begins after the sun has risen sufficiently and continues until before midday (Zawal). It is especially good to pray when the sun is well above the horizon.

Chasht is not restricted to a specific clock time such as 9 or 10 in the morning. Its time depends on the position of the sun.

How Many Rak‘ahs Are There in Chasht?

At least two rak‘ahs can be offered. The Hadith literature mentions different occasions when the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) offered Duha prayer, and there is also room to offer more rak‘ahs.

Scholars have discussed different numbers of rak‘ahs based on the narrations. Two, four, six, eight, or more rak‘ahs may be offered as voluntary prayer.

Virtue of Chasht Prayer

Several Hadith mention the virtue of Duha prayer. In Sahih Muslim, a narration from Abu Dharr (RA) explains that a person has a duty of charity for every joint in the body each day, and two rak‘ahs of Duha prayer are sufficient for this.

This shows that Chasht prayer is a beautiful way to thank Allah for His blessings and gain the reward of voluntary worship.

Adhan and Iqamah | Method, Words, Response and Dua Read here

3. Awwabin Prayer

The term Awwabin is commonly used for voluntary prayers offered after the obligatory Maghrib prayer and its Sunnah.

In the South Asian Hanafi tradition, six rak‘ahs after Maghrib are commonly referred to as Salat al-Awwabin. However, some scholars use the term “Salat al-Awwabin” for Duha prayer as well, because the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used this expression in connection with Duha prayer.

Therefore, there is a difference between the common Fiqh usage and the usage found in Hadith.

Nafl Prayer After Maghrib

Offering voluntary prayer after the obligatory Maghrib prayer and its Sunnah is permissible and rewarding. A person may offer two, four, six, or more rak‘ahs according to their ability.

There is a well-known narration in South Asian literature mentioning that a person who offers six rak‘ahs after Maghrib receives the reward of twelve years of worship. This narration is found in some Hadith books, but scholars have discussed its chain of narration. Therefore, this specific virtue should not be presented as an unquestionable authentic Hadith.

However, offering Nafl prayer after Maghrib is, in itself, permissible and rewarding.

4. Tahajjud Prayer

Tahajjud is one of the most important voluntary prayers. Its virtue is mentioned in both the Quran and Hadith.

The time for Tahajjud begins after Isha prayer and continues until the beginning of Fajr. However, praying during the last part of the night is considered especially virtuous.

The Best Time for Tahajjud

The last third of the night is considered a very blessed time for Tahajjud.

For example, if the period from Maghrib to Fajr is twelve hours, the last four hours would be the final third of the night.

A person who expects to wake up during the last part of the night may delay Witr and pray it after Tahajjud. If they are not confident that they will wake up, it is better to pray Witr before going to sleep.

How Many Rak‘ahs of Tahajjud?

Tahajjud can be offered with at least two rak‘ahs. A person may pray two rak‘ahs at a time and continue according to their ability.

There are different narrations about the night prayer of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Narrations from Aishah (RA) mention eight rak‘ahs along with Witr.

Therefore, eight rak‘ahs of Tahajjud is a well-known and established practice, but it should not be treated as a fixed number that makes praying fewer or more rak‘ahs incorrect.

Virtue of Tahajjud

Allah says in the Quran:

And during part of the night, offer the Tahajjud prayer as an additional prayer for you.”

(Surah Al-Isra: 79)

The Hadith also mention the great virtue of night prayer. Tahajjud helps a person become closer to Allah, provides a special time for making Dua, and develops humility and concentration in worship.

There are also authentic Hadith about making Dua and seeking forgiveness during the last part of the night. This is why righteous people have always given special importance to Tahajjud.

Simple Method of Tahajjud

Tahajjud is prayed like an ordinary Nafl prayer.

Make the intention for two rak‘ahs, begin the prayer, recite Surah Al-Fatihah followed by another Surah, perform Ruku and Sajdah, and complete the second rak‘ah with Salam.

After that, you can offer more rak‘ahs in sets of two.

There is no need to recite very long Surahs. A person who knows only short Surahs can also pray Tahajjud. What matters most is sincerity and consistency in worship.

5. Salat al-Tasbih

Salat al-Tasbih is a well-known voluntary prayer in which a specific Tasbih is recited several times during the prayer.

A narration about Salat al-Tasbih is reported from Abbas (RA) and is found in Sunan Abi Dawud, Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, and other Hadith collections. Scholars have different opinions about the authenticity of this narration. Some scholars considered it acceptable for practice, while others regarded it as weak. Therefore, there is a difference of opinion among scholars regarding this prayer.

A person who offers Salat al-Tasbih may offer it as a voluntary act of worship, while a person who does not offer it because of the difference of opinion regarding the Hadith should not be blamed.

When Can Salat al-Tasbih Be Prayed?

It may generally be offered at times when voluntary prayer is permitted.

It should not be offered during the prohibited times, such as:

  • At the time of sunrise

  • At the exact time of Zawal

  • At the time of sunset

Similarly, voluntary prayers should be avoided after Fajr until sunrise and after Asr until sunset.

Therefore, Salat al-Tasbih should be offered at a time when Nafl prayer is permitted.

Tasbih Recited in Salat al-Tasbih

The following words are recited during Salat al-Tasbih:

The Tasbih is recited at specific places during the prayer according to the method being followed.

First Method of Salat al-Tasbih

According to one well-known method, the Tasbih is recited 75 times in each rak‘ah.

In the first rak‘ah:

  • Recite the Tasbih 15 times after Thana.

  • After Surah Al-Fatihah and another Surah, recite it 10 times while still standing before Ruku.

  • After the usual Tasbih of Ruku, recite it 10 times.

  • After rising from Ruku, recite it 10 times.

  • After the usual Tasbih in the first Sajdah, recite it 10 times.

  • While sitting between the two Sajdahs, recite it 10 times.

  • After the usual Tasbih in the second Sajdah, recite it 10 times.

This makes 75 repetitions in one rak‘ah.

In four rak‘ahs:

75 × 4 = 300 repetitions

of the Tasbih are completed.

Second Method of Salat al-Tasbih

According to the second method, the 15 repetitions are not recited immediately after Thana. Instead, they are recited after Surah Al-Fatihah and the additional Surah.

The Tasbih is then recited at the specified places during Ruku, after Ruku, the two Sajdahs, and the sitting between them.

This method also results in 75 repetitions in each rak‘ah.

Scholars have discussed the narrations and methods of Salat al-Tasbih in detail. Therefore, it is better to learn the practical method from a reliable scholar or a trusted book according to the school of thought one follows.

Which Surahs Should Be Recited in Salat al-Tasbih?

There is no particular Surah that must be recited in Salat al-Tasbih. Like other Nafl prayers, any Surah from the Quran may be recited after Surah Al-Fatihah.

Some books of Fiqh mention certain Surahs as preferable, but they are not compulsory.

The main purpose is to pray, remember Allah, recite Tasbih, and worship Him sincerely.

What If You Forget the Number of Tasbih?

Since Salat al-Tasbih requires a specific number of repetitions, it is possible to lose count during the prayer.

If some repetitions are missed at one place, the relevant Fiqh guidance can be followed to complete them at an appropriate place. However, the movements of the prayer should not be made unnecessarily long.

For this reason, it is better to learn the method of Salat al-Tasbih properly from a reliable scholar or an authentic Fiqh book before performing it.

Can the Tasbih Be Counted on the Fingers?

Moving the fingers repeatedly to count the Tasbih can affect concentration during prayer. Therefore, it is better to keep count mentally if possible.

If it is difficult to remember the number, some Fiqh books mention that the fingers may be pressed gently without unnecessary movement to keep count.

The main purpose is to maintain concentration and humility during the prayer.

Important Points About Nafl Prayers

Nafl prayers do not replace the obligatory prayers. The five daily obligatory prayers should always be given the highest priority.

A person should also avoid making Nafl worship so difficult that it causes them to neglect obligatory duties, family responsibilities, or other necessary obligations.

The best approach is to worship according to one's ability and remain consistent. If someone can pray only two rak‘ahs of Tahajjud or Chasht every day, they can continue with those two rak‘ahs regularly. Consistency in worship is very valuable.

The most important thing in Nafl prayer is sincerity. These prayers are not only about gaining rewards; they are also a way of seeking Allah's pleasure and strengthening one's relationship with Him.

The Real Purpose of Nafl Prayers

Nafl prayers should not be seen simply as a list of rak‘ahs and virtues. Their real purpose is to strengthen our relationship with Allah.

The obligatory prayers teach us obedience to Allah, while Nafl prayers provide additional opportunities to come closer to Him.

When a person wakes up for Ishraq, prays Chasht during the morning, offers Nafl prayers after Maghrib, or leaves their sleep to pray Tahajjud at night, they fill different parts of their day and night with the remembrance and worship of Allah.

This is one of the beautiful aspects of Nafl worship.

Conclusion

Ishraq, Chasht, Awwabin, Tahajjud, and Salat al-Tasbih are different forms of voluntary worship. The virtues of Tahajjud and Chasht are clearly supported by authentic Hadith, while some specific virtues and narrations about Salat al-Tasbih are subject to scholarly discussion.

For this reason, it is important to distinguish between authentic and weak narrations when writing or reading Islamic content. When scholars have different opinions about a narration, mentioning that difference is the safer and more balanced approach.

May Allah help us remain regular in the obligatory prayers, encourage us to perform voluntary worship, give us the ability to pray at night, and grant us sincerity in our worship. Ameen.
