 Introduction

Human beings naturally want to know about their future. They want to know what the coming days may bring, which decision will be better for them, and which step may lead to harm or loss. This desire becomes especially strong when a person is making an important decision about marriage, travel, employment, business, education, or another major matter.

Sometimes, however, this desire leads people toward fortune-tellers, astrologers, soothsayers, people who claim to reveal the future, or various self-invented methods of seeking guidance. Islam rejects these practices and gives Muslims a pure and faith-based alternative: Istikhara.

Istikhara does not mean trying to discover hidden information about the future. It means asking Allah for what is good and beneficial. A person admits his own limited knowledge and weakness and turns to his All-Knowing and All-Wise Lord, saying in effect:

"O Allah, if this matter is good for my religion, my worldly life, and my final outcome, decree it for me, make it easy for me, and bless it for me. And if it is harmful for me, turn it away from me and turn me away from it. Then decree whatever is good for me wherever it may be, and make me content with it."

This is the basic concept of Istikhara that the Prophet Muhammad taught his Companions.

Self-Invented Methods of Knowing the Future in the Age of Ignorance

Before Islam, different superstitious and self-invented methods were common in Arab society for making decisions about the future. People used fortune-telling and soothsaying when making decisions about travel, marriage, trade, and other matters.

The Qur'an also rejected some of these practices. Allah says:

"And that you seek decisions through divining arrows. That is disobedience."

Various forms of fortune-telling and attempts to discover the unseen existed during the Age of Ignorance. These included making decisions through arrows, taking good or bad omens from birds, consulting soothsayers, drawing lines, and making different kinds of predictions.

The narration of Jabir ibn Abdullah رضي الله عنهما about the Prophet's teaching of Istikhara makes it clear that instead of relying on omens and superstitions, a Muslim should turn to Allah and ask Him for what is good.

Making Decisions Through Arrows

During the Age of Ignorance, people used arrows to make decisions about different matters. Certain words or instructions were written on the arrows, and the result of the drawn arrow was taken as an indication of whether a particular action should be taken or abandoned.

This was not a source of revelation or divine guidance. It was simply a man-made system based on superstition and chance.

Islam abolished such practices and taught Muslims to seek goodness from Allah, use lawful means, gather relevant information, and consult knowledgeable and experienced people before making important decisions.

Soothsaying and Claims of Knowing the Unseen

During the Age of Ignorance, soothsayers were people who claimed to know hidden matters or future events. Islam strongly rejected this concept of fortune-telling and claiming knowledge of the unseen.

The Prophet said that whoever goes to an oracle or fortune-teller and asks him about something will have his prayer not accepted for forty nights. This is reported in Sahih Muslim.

An important point should be understood here: this does not mean that the obligation of prayer is removed. Rather, the hadith contains a severe warning concerning its acceptance. Therefore, a Muslim should completely avoid going to people who claim to reveal hidden or future matters.

Believing a soothsayer or fortune-teller and accepting his claims as true is even more serious because the true and complete knowledge of the unseen belongs to Allah.

Making Decisions Through Birds and Omens

In ancient Arab society, people also looked at the flight and direction of birds when making decisions. If a bird flew in a particular direction, they might consider it a good or bad omen.

Islam rejected this type of superstition. The Prophet said:

"There is no evil omen."

In another narration, the Prophet mentioned that a good word or good omen is something positive.

This teaches us that a Muslim should not attach his heart to birds, stars, particular days, dates, numbers, or accidental events. Benefit and harm are ultimately in the control of Allah.

Fortune-Telling Through Lines, Stones, and Other Signs

In ancient times, people also used methods such as drawing lines on the ground, throwing stones, and interpreting different signs to make predictions about the future.

Some narrations in Sunan Abi Dawud mention practices such as 'iyafah, tiyarah, and turuq, which were associated with practices of the Age of Ignorance. Some chains of these narrations have been discussed by hadith scholars, so their grading should be taken into consideration when presenting them. Nevertheless, the general rejection of superstition and fortune-telling is established through stronger and authentic evidence.

The basic Islamic principle is that a person should not treat a method as a source of supernatural guidance when there is no basis for it in the Shariah.

Astrology and Trying to Predict the Future Through Stars

Observing stars and other celestial bodies to understand weather, directions, time, seasons, or other physical matters is a separate subject. However, claiming that the position of stars can reveal a person's destiny, marriage, wealth, death, or future events is not consistent with Islamic teachings.

Therefore, astronomy and astrology should not be confused with one another.

Astronomy is the scientific study of celestial objects and phenomena. Astrology, when it claims that the positions of stars and planets determine or reveal human destiny and future events, is a different matter.

What Is Istikhara?

The word Istikhara means seeking what is good from Allah.

The purpose of Istikhara is not for a person to receive a hidden message about the future. Rather, it is to place a matter before Allah and ask Him to decree what is best.

The Prophet Muhammad taught Istikhara to Jabir ibn Abdullah In Sahih al-Bukhari, Jabir رضي الله عنهما reported that the Prophet used to teach the Companions Istikhara in the same way that he taught them a Surah from the Qur'an.

This narration alone shows how important Istikhara was in the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ.

The Sunnah Method of Istikhara

The Sunnah method of Istikhara is simple.

When a person is considering a permissible matter, he should:

  1. Perform Wudu.
  2. Pray two voluntary units of prayer (two Rak'ahs), separate from the obligatory prayer.
  3. Recite the supplication of Istikhara.
  4. At the place in the supplication where هَذَا الْأَمْرَ (this matter) is mentioned, keep the matter in mind or mention it.
  5. Then rely upon Allah, take the appropriate lawful means, and proceed with the matter.

The narration in Sahih al-Bukhari clearly mentions praying two Rak'ahs and then making the supplication of Istikhara while mentioning the matter under consideration.

The Dua of Istikhara

(Sahih al-Bukhari: 6382)

Simple Meaning of the Dua of Istikhara

"O Allah, I seek what is good from You through Your knowledge, and I seek ability through Your power. I ask You from Your great bounty. You have power and I do not have power. You know and I do not know, and You are the Knower of all things unseen.

O Allah, if You know that this matter is good for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affair, then decree it for me, make it easy for me, and bless it for me.

And if You know that this matter is harmful for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affair, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it. Decree whatever is good for me wherever it may be, and then make me content with it."

This is the true spirit of Istikhara.

Istikhara Is Not Fortune-Telling

One of the biggest misunderstandings about Istikhara is the belief that after performing it, a person must see a future event in a dream or receive some kind of supernatural sign.

This is not necessary.

The authentic hadith about Istikhara mentions the two Rak'ahs and the supplication. It does not make seeing a dream a required part of Istikhara.

Therefore, statements such as:

"If you see the color green, the matter is good."

"If you see black, the matter is bad."

"If a particular saint or elder appears in your dream, you have received permission."

"You must have a dream after Istikhara."

These should not be presented as the Sunnah method of Istikhara.

A person may have a dream after Istikhara, or may not have one at all. Seeing a dream is not a condition for the validity of Istikhara.

What Should You Do After Istikhara?

After performing Istikhara, a person should place his trust in Allah while also taking the appropriate lawful means.

If the matter concerns marriage, investigate the person's religious commitment, character, conduct, family background, compatibility, responsibilities, and other important matters.

If it concerns a business, examine the financial situation, market conditions, possible risks, and seek advice from experienced people.

If it concerns a job, consider the salary, working environment, responsibilities, future prospects, and other relevant factors.

Istikhara is not a replacement for intelligence, research, or consultation.

A Muslim's approach should therefore be:

Research + Consultation + Istikhara + Tawakkul

The Prophet taught Istikhara, while the Qur'an also emphasizes consultation. Therefore, for important decisions, it is beneficial to combine Istikhara with advice from knowledgeable and experienced people.

Self-Invented Methods of Istikhara

Today, various methods of Istikhara are practiced that have no established basis in the Sunnah.

For example, some people claim that after Istikhara a person must not speak to anyone, must sleep facing a particular direction, must see a particular color in a dream, or must repeatedly recite a certain verse until the body automatically turns to the right or left.

Some people even claim that they will perform Istikhara at night and give the final answer to someone the next day.

These practices should not be presented as the Sunnah method of Istikhara.

In particular, the idea that a person can perform an Istikhara "on behalf of someone else" and then discover a definite unseen answer is different from the method taught by the Prophet ﷺ.

The Prophet taught Jabir رضي الله عنهما a method in which the person himself prays two Rak'ahs and asks Allah for what is best.

Can Only Religious Elders Perform Istikhara?

Some people think:

"We are sinners, so our Istikhara will not be accepted. We need a pious elder or a religious scholar to perform Istikhara for us."

This idea is not correct.

Allah is the Lord of all His servants. A Muslim should turn directly to Allah in repentance, prayer, and supplication.

If a person is aware of his sins, he should sincerely repent, try to leave those sins, and then perform Istikhara himself for his permissible matters.

Istikhara is not restricted to a particular class of people.

The narration in Sahih al-Bukhari shows that the Prophet taught the Companions the method of Istikhara themselves.

Istikhara in Matters of Marriage

Marriage is one of the most important decisions in life, so Istikhara can certainly be performed regarding marriage. Consultation and proper investigation are also important.

However, a person should not abandon necessary research simply because he has performed Istikhara.

When considering a marriage proposal, attention should be given to religious commitment, character, personality, responsibility, family circumstances, compatibility, and other important matters.

Family members and trustworthy people should also be consulted, and Allah should be asked for what is best.

If an obstacle later appears, it is not necessary to declare every obstacle to be "the answer to Istikhara." Events can happen for many different reasons. A Muslim should trust Allah while continuing to deal with matters according to sound and lawful means.

Can Istikhara Be Repeated?

If a person remains uncertain about a matter, there is room to repeat the Istikhara and supplication.

However, Istikhara should not become a mechanical process in which a person keeps repeating it until he receives the answer he personally wants.

The real purpose is to submit the matter to Allah, not to obtain supernatural confirmation of one's own preference.

Peace of Heart After Istikhara

There is a particularly meaningful phrase at the end of the Istikhara supplication:

"Then make me content with it."

This is very important for understanding the true spirit of Istikhara.

A person is not simply asking Allah to give him what he wants. Instead, he is asking:

"O Allah, if what I want is not good for me, take it away from me and turn me away from it. Then give me whatever is good for me, wherever it may be, and make my heart content with Your decision."

This means that a Muslim submits his personal desires to the decision of Allah.

Istikhara Should Not Become a Business

Today, in some places, Istikhara is presented as a commercial service. Advertisements may claim:

"Get Istikhara to get rid of your problems."

"Have Istikhara performed from home."

"Find out through Istikhara whether your work will succeed."

Such claims can make people believe that Istikhara is a supernatural service that must be performed by another person.

The Sunnah method is much simpler.

Pray two Rak'ahs, make the supplication, mention your matter, take the necessary steps, consult trustworthy people, and place your trust in Allah.

There is no need to treat a particular person as someone who possesses knowledge of the unseen.

An Astrologer and a Person Performing Istikhara Are Not the Same

It is important to understand the fundamental difference between Istikhara and fortune-telling.

An astrologer or soothsayer claims to tell people about future events.

A person performing Istikhara does not ask Allah to reveal the future to him. Instead, he asks Allah for goodness, guidance, ease, and blessing.

On one side, a person claims knowledge that is beyond his human limits. On the other side, a servant admits his limited knowledge and relies upon the knowledge and power of Allah.

This is an important difference in the concepts of Tawheed and Tawakkul.

Istikhara and Sound Judgment Go Together

Another important point is that Istikhara does not mean abandoning thought, research, or consultation.

For example, if a business opportunity clearly involves something prohibited in Islam, Istikhara cannot make it permissible.

Likewise, if a marriage proposal has clear and serious problems, a person cannot simply say:

"I performed Istikhara, so everything must be fine."

Istikhara is a way of asking Allah for what is good in permissible matters. It is not a method for making something unlawful lawful or for ignoring obvious facts.

An Important Lesson

Human knowledge is limited.

A person makes decisions based on the information available to him, but he cannot know all the consequences that may appear in the future.

Sometimes we believe something will be beneficial, only to discover later that it contained harm. At other times, something that initially feels like a loss eventually becomes a means through which Allah protects us from a much greater difficulty.

Allah says:

"Perhaps you dislike something while it is good for you, and perhaps you love something while it is bad for you. Allah knows, and you do not know."

(Surah Al-Baqarah: 216)

Istikhara is a practical expression of this reality.

Istikhara in Summary

Istikhara does not mean that you must receive an answer in a dream.

It does not mean that a religious elder will discover an unseen decision for you.

It does not mean that a particular color, direction, or physical movement will reveal the future.

It does not mean that research and consultation are no longer necessary.

Rather, Istikhara means:

Acknowledge your limited knowledge, rely upon Allah's knowledge, pray two voluntary Rak'ahs, make the Sunnah supplication, take the appropriate lawful means, consult experienced and trustworthy people, and then try to remain content with whatever Allah decrees.

The Prophet gave such importance to Istikhara that Jabir رضي الله عنهما said that the Prophet used to teach them Istikhara just as he taught them a Surah from the Qur'an.

This is sufficient guidance for us.

Conclusion

Istikhara is a beautiful teaching of Islam that takes a person away from superstition, fortune-telling, astrology, omens, and self-invented practices and connects him directly with Allah.

When a person performs Istikhara regarding a permissible matter, he is essentially admitting before his Lord:

"O Allah, I do not know, but You know. I am weak, but You have complete power. I do not know the future, but You know all that is unseen. Therefore, decree for me whatever is best for my religion, my worldly life, and my final outcome."

This is the true spirit of Istikhara.

Therefore, we should not turn Istikhara into something complicated, mysterious, or commercial. We should not become obsessed with dreams, treat colors and signs as religious evidence, or consider any person to possess knowledge of the unseen.

Instead, we should follow the simple method taught by the Prophet :

Two Rak'ahs + the Dua of Istikhara + proper research + consultation + trust in Allah.

May Allah enable us to perform Istikhara according to the Sunnah, make wise decisions, and give priority to His pleasure in all our affairs. Ameen.
