The Foundation of Faith: Belief in Allah and the Three Types of Tawheed
Faith in Allah is the foundation of Islam. It is the first and most important belief upon which every aspect of a Muslim’s life is built. The purpose of our creation, the mission of all the Prophets, and the message of the divine scriptures all revolve around knowing Allah, believing in Him, and worshipping Him alone.
Allah says in the Qur’an:
“The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and so have the believers. All of them have believed in Allah, His angels, His books, and His messengers. They say, ‘We make no distinction between any of His messengers,’ and they say, ‘We hear and we obey. We seek Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the final return.’”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:285)
Allah also says:
“O you who believe, believe in Allah, His Messenger, and the Book He sent down upon His Messenger, and the scriptures He sent down before. Whoever disbelieves in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Last Day has certainly gone far astray.”
(Surah An-Nisa 4:136)
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ explained the meaning of faith when Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) asked him about Eemaan:
“Faith is to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and to believe in divine decree, both its good and its bad.”
(Sahih Muslim)
These six pillars form the foundation of Islamic faith. A Muslim’s belief is not complete without accepting all of them.
What Does Belief in Allah Mean?
Belief in Allah is more than simply acknowledging that He exists. It means having complete certainty that Allah alone is the Creator, Owner, Sustainer, and Controller of the universe.
He alone deserves worship, love, trust, hope, fear, and obedience. He possesses every attribute of perfection and is completely free from any weakness or deficiency.
A believer knows that all goodness comes from Allah, places their trust in Him during times of ease and hardship, and strives to live according to His guidance.

The Three Types of Tawheed
Islamic scholars have explained Tawheed through three closely connected categories:
- Tawheed ar-Rububiyyah (The Oneness of Lordship)
- Tawheed al-Uluhiyyah (The Oneness of Worship)
- Tawheed al-Asma wa as-Sifaat (The Oneness of Allah’s Names and Attributes)
These categories are not separate beliefs. Rather, they work together to provide a complete understanding of faith in Allah.
1. Tawheed ar-Rububiyyah (The Oneness of Lordship)
Tawheed ar-Rububiyyah means believing that Allah alone is the Creator, Owner, Provider, and Controller of everything in existence.
He gives life and causes death. He provides sustenance, answers prayers, controls the affairs of the universe, and manages all creation according to His perfect wisdom.
Allah says:
“Surely, His is the creation and the command. Blessed is Allah, the Lord of all worlds.”
(Surah Al-A‘raf 7:54)
A Muslim believes that everything that happens in the universe takes place by Allah’s knowledge, will, and power. Nothing occurs outside His control.
The Qur’anic Emphasis on Lordship
The Qur’an repeatedly reminds people that Allah is the Lord of the heavens and the earth.
In Surah Al-Fatihah, Muslims recite:
“All praise is for Allah, the Lord of all worlds.”
(Surah Al-Fatihah 1:2)
Allah also says:
“So all praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth, and Lord of all worlds.”
(Surah Al-Jathiyah 45:36)
The recognition of Allah’s Lordship naturally leads a believer to submit to Him and obey His commands.
Allah says:
“Say, ‘Indeed, the guidance of Allah is the true guidance, and we have been commanded to submit to the Lord of all worlds.’”
(Surah Al-An‘am 6:71)
He also says:
“Say, ‘Indeed, my prayer, my sacrifice, my living, and my dying are for Allah, the Lord of all worlds.’”
(Surah Al-An‘am 6:162)
Why Believing in Lordship Alone Is Not Enough
One of the important lessons from the Qur’an is that many of the pagan Arabs already believed that Allah was the Creator and Sustainer of the universe.
When they were asked who created the heavens and the earth, they acknowledged Allah.
Allah says:
“If you ask them who created them, they will surely say, ‘Allah.’”
(Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:87)
Despite this belief, they were not considered believers because they directed acts of worship to others besides Allah.
This shows that simply believing Allah is the Creator is not enough. True faith requires worshipping Him alone without associating any partners with Him.
The Prophets were not sent merely to teach people that Allah created the world. They were sent to call people to worship Allah alone and to abandon all forms of shirk (associating partners with Him).

2. Tawheed al-Uluhiyyah (The Oneness of Worship)
Tawheed al-Uluhiyyah means directing all acts of worship to Allah alone. It is the belief that only Allah deserves to be worshipped, obeyed, loved, and relied upon in the ultimate sense.
Worship in Islam is not limited to prayer. It includes every act of devotion performed with sincerity for the sake of Allah. This includes prayer, fasting, charity, pilgrimage, supplication, sacrifice, trust, hope, fear, and love.
Allah says:
“And I did not create the jinn and mankind except that they worship Me.”
(Surah Adh-Dhariyat 51:56)
This verse clearly shows the purpose of our creation. We were created to know Allah, worship Him, and live according to His guidance.
The Message of All Prophets
Every Prophet who was sent by Allah called his people to the same fundamental message: worship Allah alone.
Allah says:
“O my people, worship Allah. You have no god worthy of worship except Him.”
(Surah Al-A‘raf)
This message was preached by Nuh (Noah), Hud, Salih, Shu‘ayb, Ibrahim, Musa, Isa, and finally Muhammad ﷺ.
Although their laws differed in some matters, their call to Tawheed remained the same.
Important Requirements of Tawheed al-Uluhiyyah
1. Loving Allah Above Everything Else
A believer may love family, wealth, friends, and homeland, but the greatest love in the heart must belong to Allah.
Allah says:
“But those who believe are stronger in their love for Allah.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:165)
True faith grows when love for Allah becomes greater than every worldly attachment.
2. Supplication Should Be Directed to Allah Alone
Dua is one of the greatest acts of worship.
A Muslim should turn to Allah directly, asking Him for help, forgiveness, guidance, and mercy.
Allah says:
“Do not call upon besides Allah that which can neither benefit you nor harm you.”
(Surah Yunus 10:106)
Since Allah alone has complete power over all things, ultimate reliance and supplication belong to Him alone.
Introduction to Tawhid al-Asma wa al-Sifat Read here
3. Trusting Allah
Islam encourages believers to take practical means while placing their hearts completely in Allah.
A farmer plants seeds, a student studies, and a traveler prepares for a journey, but all of them know that success ultimately comes from Allah.
This balance between effort and trust is known as Tawakkul.
4. Fear and Hope
A believer lives between hope and fear.
He hopes for Allah's mercy, forgiveness, and reward, while fearing His punishment and accountability.
This balance protects a person from despair on one side and carelessness on the other.
Why Tawheed al-Uluhiyyah Is So Important
Many people throughout history accepted that Allah is the Creator, yet they worshipped others alongside Him.
For this reason, the main struggle of the Prophets was not to prove that Allah exists. Rather, it was to teach people that worship belongs to Allah alone.
This is the essence of the declaration:
Whoever understands and lives by this statement has understood the heart of Islam.
3. Tawheed al-Asma wa as-Sifaat (The Oneness of Allah's Names and Attributes)
The third category of Tawheed is believing in Allah's beautiful names and perfect attributes as they are mentioned in the Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah.
Allah describes Himself through many names and attributes. He is Ar-Rahman (The Most Merciful), Al-Hakeem (The Most Wise), Al-Aleem (The All-Knowing), As-Samee' (The All-Hearing), and Al-Baseer (The All-Seeing).
A Muslim believes in these names and attributes without changing their meanings, denying them, asking how they are, or comparing them to the creation.
“There is nothing like Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.”
(Surah Ash-Shura 42:11)
This verse combines two important principles:
- Allah possesses real attributes.
- Nothing from creation resembles Him.
The Methodology of the Early Muslims
The righteous predecessors (Salaf) followed a balanced approach regarding Allah's names and attributes.
They affirmed what Allah affirmed for Himself and what the Prophet ﷺ affirmed for Him.
At the same time, they avoided comparing Allah to His creation.
Imam Malik رحمه الله was once asked about Allah's rising over the Throne. He replied:
“The meaning of Istiwa is known, its reality is unknown, belief in it is obligatory, and asking about its exact nature is an innovation.”
This statement became a foundational principle in Islamic theology.

Four Common Errors Regarding Allah's Attributes
Scholars have warned against four major mistakes:
1. Tahreef (Distortion)
Changing the clear meaning of Allah's names and attributes.
2. Ta'teel (Denial)
Rejecting or denying Allah's attributes altogether.
3. Takyeef (Asking How)
Trying to describe the exact nature or reality of Allah's attributes.
4. Tamtheel (Comparison)
Comparing Allah's attributes to those of His creation.
The correct path is to affirm what Allah and His Messenger ﷺ have taught while recognizing that Allah is unlike anything in creation.
Allah's Beautiful Names
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Allah has ninety-nine names, one hundred minus one. Whoever preserves and understands them will enter Paradise.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)
This hadith does not mean that Allah has only ninety-nine names. Rather, it highlights the special virtue of learning, understanding, and living according to these names.
Knowing Allah through His names strengthens faith, increases love for Him, and deepens a believer's relationship with his Lord.
Qur'anic Examples of Tawheed
The Qur'an is filled with verses that teach and strengthen Tawheed. Among the most important passages in this regard are Surah Al-Ikhlas and Ayat al-Kursi. Both provide a clear understanding of who Allah is and why He alone deserves worship.
Part 5: Reason, Philosophy, and Theology (Ilm al-Kalam) — The Position of Ahl al-Sunnah Reda here
1. Surah Al-Ikhlas: A Summary of Pure Tawheed
Surah Al-Ikhlas is one of the most important chapters of the Qur'an. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that it is equal to one-third of the Qur'an in reward and significance.
This short chapter summarizes the core beliefs of Islamic monotheism.
"Say: He is Allah, the One"
Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad
Allah is One and Unique. He has no partner, no equal, and no rival in His lordship, worship, names, or attributes.
"Allah, the Eternal Refuge"
Allahu As-Samad
Allah is completely self-sufficient, while every created being depends upon Him.
All creatures need Allah for their existence, sustenance, guidance, and survival, but Allah is in need of nothing.
"He neither begets nor is born"
Lam yalid wa lam yoolad
Allah has no children, parents, or family ties. He is the Creator of all things and is completely unlike His creation.
This verse refutes false beliefs that attribute offspring or lineage to Allah.
"And there is none comparable to Him"
Wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan ahad
Nothing resembles Allah in His essence, names, attributes, or actions.
He is perfect in every way and far above any comparison.
2. Ayat al-Kursi: The Greatest Verse in the Qur'an
Ayat al-Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255) is regarded as the greatest verse in the Qur'an. When the Prophet ﷺ asked Ubayy ibn Ka'b رضي الله عنه which verse in the Book of Allah was the greatest, he replied that it was Ayat al-Kursi. The Prophet ﷺ approved of his answer and praised his knowledge.
This magnificent verse contains some of the most profound descriptions of Allah's greatness, power, and perfection.
"Allah! There is no deity worthy of worship except Him."
This statement establishes Tawheed al-Uluhiyyah. It declares that Allah alone deserves worship, devotion, and obedience. No one shares His right to be worshipped.
"The Ever-Living, the Sustainer of All."
Allah is Al-Hayy (The Ever-Living) and Al-Qayyum (The Sustainer and Maintainer of all creation).
His life is perfect and eternal. He was never created and will never cease to exist. Everything in the universe depends upon Him, while He depends upon nothing.
"Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him."
Unlike human beings, Allah never becomes tired, weak, or inattentive. His care, knowledge, and control over creation never stop for even a moment.
"To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth."
Everything belongs to Allah. The heavens, the earth, and all that exists within them are under His ownership and authority.
Our wealth, abilities, families, and possessions are blessings entrusted to us by Him. Recognizing this reality develops humility, gratitude, and contentment in the heart of a believer.
"He knows what is before them and what is behind them."
Allah's knowledge is complete and perfect. He knows the past, present, and future. He knows what is visible and what is hidden. Nothing escapes His knowledge, and nothing occurs without His awareness.
"His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth."
This statement highlights the greatness, majesty, and absolute authority of Allah. The heavens and the earth, despite their vastness, are encompassed by His Kursi. It reminds believers of Allah's limitless power and the insignificance of creation when compared to His greatness.
"And preserving them does not tire Him."
Allah continuously maintains and controls the entire universe without fatigue, weakness, or exhaustion. Unlike human beings, who become tired after managing even small responsibilities, Allah's power is perfect and unlimited. The existence, order, and preservation of the heavens and the earth are sustained by Him at every moment.
"And He is the Most High, the Most Great."
Allah is exalted above all creation in His majesty, power, and greatness. He is the Most High in His essence, authority, and status, and He alone possesses absolute greatness and perfection.
Ayat al-Kursi beautifully combines the three categories of Tawheed—Lordship, Worship, and the Names and Attributes of Allah—making it one of the most powerful and comprehensive passages in the entire Qur'an.
Part 10: The Effects of Tawhid al-Asma wa al-Sifat on Faith and Life Read here
The Practical Effects of Tawheed
Tawheed is not merely a theological concept. It has a direct impact on a Muslim's daily life.
When a believer truly understands Tawheed:
1. Trust in Allah Increases
He knows that all affairs are in Allah's hands and therefore relies upon Him in every situation.
2. Sincerity in Worship Develops
Acts of worship are performed solely for Allah's pleasure, free from showing off or seeking praise from people.
3. Fear of Creation Decreases
The believer understands that no one can benefit or harm him except by Allah's permission.
4. Hope and Patience Grow Stronger
Difficulties become easier to bear because the believer knows that Allah is Wise, Merciful, and in control of all matters.
5. Love for Allah Deepens
The more a person learns about Allah's names, attributes, mercy, and blessings, the more his love for Allah increases.
6. Protection from Shirk
Understanding Tawheed helps protect a person from all forms of associating partners with Allah.
Conclusion
Belief in Allah is the foundation of Islam and the cornerstone of every act of worship.
True faith requires recognizing Allah as the only Lord of creation, worshipping Him alone without partners, and believing in His beautiful names and perfect attributes as described in the Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah.
The three categories of Tawheed—Rububiyyah, Uluhiyyah, and Asma wa Sifaat—provide a complete understanding of who Allah is and what He expects from His servants.
When Tawheed becomes firmly rooted in a believer's heart, it transforms the way he thinks, worships, and lives. It brings peace to the soul, sincerity to worship, strength during hardships, and hope for success in the Hereafter.
May Allah grant us a correct understanding of Tawheed, keep us firm upon it, and allow us to meet Him with pure faith. Ameen.
