Introduction
Salah holds a central position in Islam. The Adhan was prescribed to announce the time of the five daily obligatory prayers and to call Muslims towards prayer. It is one of the great symbols of Islam and contains declarations of the greatness of Allah, His Oneness, and the prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ.
The Adhan and Iqamah are important Sunnah practices connected with the obligatory prayers. The Adhan announces that the time of prayer has begun, while the Iqamah announces that the prayer is about to start.
According to the Hanafi school of jurisprudence, giving the Adhan for the five daily obligatory prayers and Jumu'ah prayer is Sunnah Mu'akkadah (an emphasized Sunnah). Saying the Iqamah before the obligatory prayers is also Sunnah Mu'akkadah for men. The Adhan and Iqamah are not prescribed for women according to the Hanafi school.
How to Give the Adhan
It is preferable for the person giving the Adhan, known as the Mu'adhdhin, to be in a state of Wudu, face the Qiblah, and stand at an elevated place when possible.
The Mu'adhdhin may place the index fingers of both hands in his ears while giving the Adhan.
The words of the Adhan should be pronounced clearly and calmly so that those listening can hear and understand them.

Words of the Adhan
Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest.
I testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah.
This is said twice.
I testify that Muhammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allah.
Come to prayer.
This is said twice.
Come to success.
This is also said twice.
Then:
Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest.
Finally:
There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah.
Addition in the Fajr Adhan
In the Adhan of Fajr, after:
the following words are said twice:
Prayer is better than sleep.
This addition is known as Tathweeb.
It is specific to the Fajr Adhan and is not said in the Adhan of the other daily prayers.

Responding to the Adhan
It is Sunnah for the person who hears the Adhan to respond to the words of the Mu'adhdhin. Generally, the listener repeats the words that the Mu'adhdhin says.
However, when the Mu'adhdhin says:
and:
the listener should say:
There is no power and no strength except through Allah.
This expresses that the ability to avoid sin and perform righteous deeds comes only from Allah.
Dua After the Adhan
After the Adhan, it is recommended to send blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and recite the well-known supplication after the Adhan.
The supplication is:
O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and the established prayer, grant Muhammad ﷺ the means and the virtue, and raise him to the Praiseworthy Station which You have promised him. Indeed, You do not break Your promise.
Virtue of the Dua After Adhan
The Hadith encourages Muslims to ask Allah to grant the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ Al-Wasilah, a special rank in Paradise. Therefore, after hearing the Adhan, a Muslim should make this supplication and ask Allah to grant His Messenger ﷺ the Praiseworthy Station.
What Is Iqamah?
The specific words recited immediately before the beginning of the prayer are called Iqamah or Takbir.
The Iqamah contains essentially the same words as the Adhan. However, there is an important addition. After:
the following is said twice:
The prayer has been established.
According to the Hanafi school, most of the words of the Iqamah are repeated twice, similar to the Adhan, although the Iqamah is generally recited somewhat faster than the Adhan.

Words of the Iqamah According to the Hanafi Method
The words of the Iqamah are as follows:
Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest.
I testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah.
I testify that Muhammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allah.
Come to prayer.
Come to success.
The prayer has been established.
Allah is the Greatest.
There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah.
Different Methods of Saying the Iqamah
There is a difference of opinion among Islamic jurists regarding the wording and repetition of the Iqamah.
According to the Hanafi school, most of the words of the Iqamah are repeated twice, while قَدْ قَامَتِ الصَّلَاةُ is also said twice.
In some other schools of Islamic jurisprudence, the words of the Iqamah are generally said once, while قَدْ قَامَتِ الصَّلَاةُ is said twice.
Therefore, saying the Iqamah with the words repeated once, according to the recognized method of other schools, is also a valid and established jurisprudential practice. It should not be regarded as incorrect or an innovation.
Difference Between Adhan and Iqamah
The Adhan and Iqamah are both important Islamic rituals related to Salah, but they serve different purposes.
The Adhan announces that the time for prayer has begun, whereas the Iqamah announces that the prayer is about to begin.
The Adhan is generally recited slowly and clearly so that people can hear the words properly. The Iqamah is usually recited somewhat faster.
The Iqamah contains:
twice, whereas these words are not included in the Adhan.
Responding to the Iqamah
There is discussion among Islamic jurists regarding responding to the Iqamah.
When the Mu'adhdhin says:
and:
the response is:
In the Fajr Adhan, some classical jurisprudential sources mention responding to:
with:
You have spoken the truth and done what is good.
However, it is important to distinguish between what is specifically established through authentic Hadith and what is mentioned in later jurisprudential works.
The strongest and most well-known Hadith-based instruction regarding the Adhan is to repeat the Mu'adhdhin's words and, when he says حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ and حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ, to say:
Similarly, the response:
to قَدْ قَامَتِ الصَّلَاةُ is mentioned in some jurisprudential sources, but it should not be presented as a response established by an authentic Hadith.
Important Etiquettes of the Adhan and Iqamah
The Adhan and Iqamah are among the important symbols of Islam, and therefore they should be treated with respect.
It is preferable for the Mu'adhdhin to have Wudu. Facing the Qiblah while giving the Adhan is also a recommended practice.
The Adhan should be given in a clear and audible voice, without raising the voice to such an extent that it causes unnecessary disturbance or harm to others.
A person listening to the Adhan should avoid unnecessary conversation, listen attentively, and respond to the words of the Mu'adhdhin.
After the Adhan, one should send blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and recite the supplication asking Allah to grant him Al-Wasilah and the Praiseworthy Station.
Adhan and Iqamah for Women
According to the Hanafi school, Adhan and Iqamah are not prescribed for women. Therefore, women do not give the Adhan or Iqamah for their individual prayers.
This ruling concerns women and is separate from the ruling regarding Adhan and Iqamah for men attending congregational obligatory prayers.

The Importance of the Adhan
The Adhan is not merely an announcement that the time of prayer has arrived. It is also a declaration of some of the fundamental beliefs of Islam.
It contains the greatness of Allah, the declaration of His Oneness, the testimony of the Messengerhood of Muhammad ﷺ, and the call towards prayer and success.
Five times a day, the voice of the Mu'adhdhin reminds Muslims that worldly activities should not make them neglect their Creator and that true success lies in worshipping Allah and following His commands.
The words of the Adhan remind us of Tawheed:
There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah.
They also affirm the Messengerhood of Muhammad ﷺ:
I testify that Muhammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allah.
Then comes the call:
Come to prayer; come to success.
Conclusion
The Adhan is one of the great symbols of Islam and the prescribed call to prayer. It is given for the five daily obligatory prayers and Jumu'ah, while the Iqamah is said before the obligatory prayer begins.
Responding to the words of the Mu'adhdhin, sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ after the Adhan, and reciting the prescribed supplication are important acts of worship.
The words of the Adhan repeatedly remind us that true greatness belongs to Allah alone, that only He is worthy of worship, that Muhammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allah, and that true success lies in Salah and obedience to Allah.
