Introduction

Death is an unavoidable reality for every human being. Islam has taught Muslims not only how to live their lives but also how to deal with death and the period immediately after someone passes away.

When a loved one dies at home, family members are often deeply distressed and may not know what should be done first. There are important matters to consider, such as how to care for a person who is approaching death, how to close and cover the body after death, how to perform Ghusl (ritual washing), how to prepare the Kafan (shroud), and which practices should be avoided.

This article explains the important matters from the time of death until Ghusl and Kafan in a simple and practical way. Where there are differences or details among scholars, they have been presented carefully.

1. What Should Be Done When a Person Is Near Death?

When a person is approaching death, he should be placed in a comfortable position. If possible, he may be positioned facing the Qiblah.

Those present should sit near him and gently recite the Kalimah or Shahadah so that he can hear it and may recite it himself.

The Prophet Muhammad said:

“Prompt your dying ones to say: La ilaha illallah.”

The person should not be repeatedly ordered or forced to say the Kalimah. A gentle approach is better because a dying person may be extremely weak and distressed.

Funeral Prayer (Salat al-Janazah) Read here

After the Person Recites the Kalimah

Once the dying person has recited the Kalimah, there is no need to continuously repeat it in front of him or insist that he keep saying it.

The purpose is that his final words should be words of faith and remembrance of Allah.

If he begins speaking about worldly matters after reciting the Kalimah, the Kalimah may be gently recited again so that he can repeat it.

After that, he should be allowed to rest without unnecessary pressure or conversation.

2. What Should Be Done When the Signs of Death Appear?

A dying person's breathing may change, and his body may become very weak. However, physical signs alone should not be used to make a definite medical judgment about death.

Where medical assistance is available, death should be properly confirmed by a qualified medical professional.

During this difficult time, the environment should remain calm. The family should avoid unnecessary noise and conversation and should encourage remembrance of Allah, the Kalimah, repentance and seeking Allah's forgiveness.

3. Reciting Surah Yasin

There are reports and discussions among scholars regarding the recitation of Surah Yasin for a person who is approaching death. Some scholars have considered its recitation recommended based on the narrations concerning the matter.

The reports regarding this practice have been discussed by hadith scholars, so it is better not to describe it as an unquestionably established Sunnah.

Nevertheless, reciting the Qur'an, making dua and remembering Allah are among the beneficial acts that can be done during this time.

4. What Should Be Said to a Dying Person?

During the final moments of life, unnecessary worldly conversation should be avoided.

The dying person should be encouraged toward the remembrance of Allah, the Kalimah, repentance and seeking forgiveness.

It is better to remind him of Allah's mercy and forgiveness rather than frightening him.

Family members should also remain patient and avoid crying out loudly, wailing or engaging in inappropriate expressions of grief.

5. What If a Person Says Something Inappropriate Before Death?

Sometimes, because of severe illness, pain, unconsciousness or confusion, a person may say something unusual or inappropriate during the final moments of life.

Family members should not immediately make judgments about the person's faith based on such words.

Instead, they should consider the person's condition and leave complicated religious judgments to qualified scholars.

They should continue praying for the person's forgiveness and mercy and should avoid discussing the person's final words unnecessarily with others.

6. What Should Be Done Immediately After Death?

Once death has been confirmed, the deceased person's eyes should be gently closed and the body should be placed in a proper and respectful position.

If necessary, the mouth may be gently kept closed with a strip of cloth placed under the chin and tied over the head.

The toes may also be gently brought together and tied so that the legs do not spread apart.

The body should then be covered with a clean sheet.

Arrangements for Ghusl, Kafan, the funeral prayer and burial should be made without unnecessary delay.

Dua After Death

When arranging the body, the following supplication may be recited:

“In the name of Allah and upon the way of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”

7. Respect and Privacy of the Deceased

The dignity and privacy of the deceased must be respected.

The body should not be unnecessarily exposed, photographed or recorded.

Family members should not share pictures or videos of the deceased with others.

If any physical condition or private matter is noticed while preparing the body, it should not become a subject of discussion among people.

The deceased should be treated with dignity and respect at all times.

8. Recitation of the Qur'an

During the arrangements for the Ghusl and Kafan, unnecessary conversation should be avoided.

Family members should remain engaged in dua, Istighfar and remembrance of Allah and should focus on completing the necessary arrangements respectfully.

Complete Guide to Tayammum | Obligations, Method and Hadiths in Islam Reda here

Ghusl of the Deceased

Ghusl of the deceased is a communal obligation. This means that when some Muslims perform it properly, the responsibility is fulfilled on behalf of the community.

The person performing Ghusl must maintain the privacy and dignity of the deceased.

9. Preparing the Place for Ghusl

A suitable and private place should be prepared for washing the deceased.

The place should be clean and should allow water to drain properly.

The deceased should be placed on a washing table or another suitable surface.

The area from the navel to the knees should remain covered.

This part of the body should not be exposed unnecessarily.

10. Basic Method of Washing the Deceased

First, any impurity should be removed from the body.

When cleaning the private area, the person performing Ghusl should avoid direct contact and should use a cloth or gloves.

The deceased should then be given Wudu.

Care should be taken when cleaning the mouth and nose. Water should not be poured into the mouth or nose in the same manner as when performing Wudu for a living person.

Instead, the mouth and nose may be cleaned gently using a wet cloth or cotton.

The face, hands, head and feet should then be cleaned according to the requirements of Wudu.

After this, the entire body should be washed.

Washing the body three times is the established and preferred method.

Water prepared with leaves of the lote tree (Sidr) may be used if available. If it is not available, clean lukewarm water is sufficient.

Extremely hot water should not be used.

The important point is that water should reach the entire body.

11. Washing the Body by Turning It to the Sides

The deceased may first be placed gently on the left side and water poured over the right side of the body.

The body may then be turned onto the right side and the left side washed.

Everything should be done gently and respectfully.

If anything is discharged from the body during the washing process, it should be cleaned.

The Ghusl should then be completed without unnecessary repetition.

12. Final Washing With Camphor

Camphor may be added to the water used for the final washing.

It provides a pleasant fragrance and is traditionally used when preparing the deceased.

After the Ghusl is completed, the body should be gently dried with a clean cloth.

The deceased can then be prepared for the Kafan.

13. What If Sidr Leaves Are Not Available?

If Sidr leaves are not available, ordinary clean lukewarm water can be used.

Sidr leaves are not essential for the validity of Ghusl.

Three washes are the preferred method. However, if there is a genuine reason and the entire body is washed once in a manner that fulfills the requirements of Ghusl, the basic obligation is fulfilled.

14. Who Should Perform Ghusl?

Generally, a male deceased should be washed by a male and a female deceased should be washed by a female.

A close male relative or another trustworthy person may wash a male deceased.

Similarly, close female relatives or another trustworthy woman may wash a female deceased.

There are specific rules regarding spouses.

According to the position followed in this article, a wife may wash her deceased husband, whereas a husband does not perform Ghusl for his deceased wife.

If an appropriate person is not available to perform Ghusl, the rules concerning Tayammum may apply in certain circumstances.

15. Can a Menstruating Woman Perform Ghusl?

There is scholarly detail concerning whether a woman who is menstruating or experiencing postnatal bleeding may wash the deceased.

Some scholars have regarded it as disliked, while others have permitted it.

Therefore, it should not simply be described as absolutely forbidden.

If a woman who is not menstruating is available, it is preferable for her to perform the washing.

16. If a Defect Is Noticed During Ghusl

If the person performing Ghusl notices a physical defect, illness or private matter concerning the deceased, it should not be disclosed to others.

Protecting the dignity and privacy of the deceased is an important Islamic principle.

Likewise, if the appearance of the face changes after death, it should not be discussed unnecessarily or used as a subject of gossip.

17. Hair and Nails of the Deceased

The hair of the deceased should not normally be combed or cut.

The nails should not be cut, and unnecessary hair should not be removed.

The deceased should be washed and prepared for burial without making unnecessary alterations to the body.

Kafan: The Shroud of the Deceased

After Ghusl, the deceased is wrapped in the Kafan.

The Kafan should be clean, pure and suitable for covering the body with dignity.

18. Kafan for a Man

The Sunnah Kafan for a man consists of three pieces of cloth:

  1. Izar – a lower covering
  2. Qamis – a shirt-like garment
  3. Lifafah – an outer sheet or covering

In circumstances of necessity, fewer pieces may be sufficient.

However, when there is no genuine need, the established method of Kafan should not be unnecessarily abandoned.

19. Kafan for a Woman

The preferred Kafan for a woman consists of five pieces:

  1. Qamis – a shirt-like garment
  2. Izar – a lower covering
  3. Khimar – a head covering
  4. Lifafah – an outer sheet
  5. Sinaband – a chest covering

In circumstances of need, fewer pieces may be used.

20. How to Wrap the Deceased in the Kafan

First, spread the outer sheet.

Place the Izar over it and then place the Qamis on top.

Carefully place the deceased on the Kafan.

The Qamis is put on the deceased, followed by the head covering where applicable.

The Izar is then wrapped around the body.

Finally, the outer sheet is wrapped around the deceased.

The Kafan may be secured with strips of cloth so that it does not become loose during transportation.

The knots should be made securely but without excessive tightening.

21. Applying Fragrance to the Deceased

Fragrance may be applied to the deceased in the places mentioned in the established funeral practices.

Camphor may also be used where appropriate.

However, practices that have no established basis should not be treated as part of the religious requirements.

22. What Should Not Be Placed Inside the Kafan?

Unestablished written formulas, special letters, religious certificates or other objects should not be treated as necessary parts of the Kafan.

Likewise, writing the Kalimah, Quranic verses or supplications on the Kafan should not be considered a required or established part of the burial process.

Instead of adding unnecessary objects to the Kafan, family members should make dua for the deceased and perform other permissible acts of charity and goodness on their behalf.

23. Kafan and Burial of a Child

If a child is born alive and then dies, the child should be washed, shrouded and the funeral prayer should be performed before burial.

A name should also be given to the child.

If a baby is stillborn and there was no sign of life at birth, the ruling is different.

The child may be washed and wrapped respectfully, but the rules concerning a child who was born alive and then died do not apply in exactly the same way.

In cases of miscarriage, the ruling can differ depending on the stage of development and whether recognizable body parts have formed.

Such cases require careful consideration rather than applying one general rule to every situation.

24. Kafan of a Young Girl

There are details concerning the Kafan of a young girl.

Even when a girl is very young, using more covering is preferable, while fewer pieces may be sufficient in cases of need.

25. The Extra Sheet Placed Over the Funeral Bier

Sometimes an additional sheet is placed over the body or funeral bier during transportation.

This additional sheet is not part of the actual Kafan.

The Kafan refers to the cloth or clothes used to shroud the deceased according to the prescribed method.

Hastening the Burial

After Ghusl, Kafan and the funeral prayer, the deceased should be buried without unnecessary delay.

The Prophet Muhammad encouraged Muslims to hasten the funeral.

Therefore, unnecessary waiting for people, excessive ceremonies or cultural customs should not cause unreasonable delays in burial.

Taking the Deceased to Another City

In general, the deceased should be washed, shrouded and buried in the place where the death occurred.

However, circumstances can differ. Distance, necessity, family circumstances and other relevant factors may affect the ruling.

Therefore, a specific situation should be considered according to its circumstances.

Important Advice for the Family

When someone dies in a family, the first priority should be patience and turning toward Allah.

Family members should avoid loud wailing, inappropriate expressions of grief and customs that contradict Islamic teachings.

They should pray for the deceased and arrange the Ghusl, Kafan and funeral without unnecessary delay.

Photographs and videos of the deceased should not be taken or shared.

Any private defect or condition noticed during Ghusl should not be disclosed to others.

Relatives and neighbours should help the bereaved family with practical matters so that they are not burdened with unnecessary responsibilities during their grief.

Unnecessary expenses and extravagant funeral customs should also be avoided.

Dua for the Deceased

One of the most important things family members can do for the deceased is to make dua for forgiveness and mercy.

The following supplication may be recited:

“O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, grant him well-being and pardon him.”

If the deceased is a woman, the appropriate feminine form of the supplication can be used.

Conclusion

Islam has provided guidance for Muslims even during the difficult moments surrounding death.

A person who is approaching death should be gently encouraged toward the Kalimah and the remembrance of Allah. After death is confirmed, the body should be treated with dignity, covered appropriately, washed, shrouded and buried without unnecessary delay.

The family should remain patient, avoid unnecessary customs and focus on dua, forgiveness and fulfilling the rights of the deceased.

The most important purpose of these practices is not cultural ceremony but respect for the deceased, obedience to Islamic teachings and seeking Allah's mercy and forgiveness.
