Islam is a complete way of life. It does not only teach us how to worship Allah, but also teaches us how to behave in our daily lives.
Islam gives us guidance about our clothes, food, speech, relationships, parents, friends, sleep, cleanliness, recitation of the Quran, and supplication.
A Muslim's good character is not shown only through worship. It is also reflected in the way he speaks to others, treats his parents, meets people, eats and drinks, and deals with everyday situations.
The Quran says:
“Indeed, Allah commands justice, excellence, and giving to relatives their due.”
This verse beautifully highlights some of the most important principles of Islamic life: justice, kindness, and fulfilling the rights of relatives. These teachings are also reflected in the manners and Sunnah discussed in this article.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“The best among you are those who have the best character.”
This article explains some important Islamic manners in a simple and practical way.

Actions Shape Our Life
A famous Urdu couplet says:
A person's character is built through his daily habits. Good habits make a person better, while bad habits can gradually damage his character.
Islamic manners are therefore not just rules to memorize. They are meant to become part of our daily lives.
When a child learns to say Salam, speak the truth, respect parents, say Bismillah before eating, and recite the supplications before sleeping, these habits can remain with him throughout his life.
Manners of Dress
Clothing is a blessing from Allah. Islam teaches us to keep our clothes clean, modest, and appropriate.
1. Keep your clothes clean
A Muslim should take care of personal cleanliness and wear clean and decent clothes.
2. Wearing white clothes
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encouraged people to wear white clothes. White is a preferred color, but this does not mean that Muslims must always wear white. Other permissible colors may also be worn.
3. Men should keep their clothing above the ankles
Men should take care that garments such as trousers, shalwar, or a lower garment do not fall below the ankles. A Muslim should also avoid pride and arrogance in his clothing.
4. Women should observe proper covering
Women should wear clothing that properly covers the body according to Islamic guidelines and does not reveal the shape of the body unnecessarily.
5. Start with the right side
The Prophet ﷺ taught Muslims to begin many good actions with the right side. This also applies to putting on clothes.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“When you put on clothes and when you perform ablution, start with your right side.”
6. Make a supplication when wearing new clothes
New clothes are a blessing from Allah. When wearing something new, a Muslim should thank Allah and recite the supplication reported from the Prophet ﷺ:
“O Allah, all praise belongs to You. You have given me this clothing. I ask You for its goodness and the goodness for which it was made, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil for which it was made.”
7. Choose modest and decent clothing
A Muslim should choose clothing that is clean, modest, respectful, and suitable for the occasion.

Manners of Meeting and Greeting Others
Islam gives great importance to love and brotherhood among Muslims. Saying Salam is one of the simplest ways of spreading peace and affection.
1. Say Salam when meeting someone
When meeting another Muslim, say:
Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh
This is more than a greeting. It is a prayer for peace, mercy, and blessings.
2. Meet people with a pleasant face
A smile and friendly attitude can make a meeting more pleasant. Islam encourages good manners and kindness toward others.
3. Shake hands when appropriate
Shaking hands is a good way to show affection and strengthen relationships when appropriate. One should also ask about the other person's well-being.
4. Wear clean clothes when visiting someone
When going to meet someone, one should pay attention to personal cleanliness and appearance.
5. Ask permission before entering someone's home
Islam strongly respects people's privacy.
Allah says:
“O believers! Do not enter any house other than your own until you have asked for permission and greeted its occupants.”
6. Enter only after permission
After receiving permission, enter respectfully and greet the people inside.
7. Treat guests with respect
When someone comes to visit, receive them with kindness and respect and offer hospitality according to one's ability.
8. Help people when possible
If someone comes with a genuine need, try to help them as much as you reasonably can.
9. Return the Salam
If someone says:
Assalamu Alaikum
reply:
Wa Alaikum Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
Allah says:
“When you are greeted with a greeting, respond with a better one or at least return it.”
10. Thank Allah when asked about your well-being
When someone asks how you are, it is good to say:
Alhamdulillah, I am well.
This reminds us that every blessing comes from Allah.
11. Convey someone's Salam
If someone sends Salam through you, convey the Salam and also convey the reply.
12. Say Salam when entering your home
When entering your home, greet your family members. This helps create an atmosphere of love and peace in the home.

Manners of Conversation
The tongue is a great blessing from Allah. Through our words, we can earn reward, but we can also hurt people and commit sins.
Therefore, a Muslim should be careful about what he says.
1. Always speak the truth
Truthfulness is one of the foundations of good character.
2. Do not abandon the truth because of people
A Muslim should not leave the truth simply because he is afraid of people's reaction. However, truth should be spoken with wisdom and good manners.
3. Speak gently
A soft and respectful way of speaking can make even difficult advice easier to accept.
4. Keep your tongue away from bad words
Avoid abusive language, vulgar speech, insults, false accusations, and words that hurt others.
5. Do not interrupt other people's conversation
If two people are talking, do not interfere without a genuine reason.
6. Think before answering
When someone asks a question, understand it properly and think before answering. If you do not know something, it is better to say, “I don't know,” rather than give incorrect information.
7. Listen carefully
Good communication is not only about speaking. A good listener also gives others proper attention.
8. Respect age and position
When speaking to parents, elders, teachers, scholars, or people deserving respect, use appropriate language and manners.
9. Speak less and listen more
There is wisdom in avoiding unnecessary talk. A person should speak when there is something useful to say.
10. Stop backbiting
If someone begins to backbite another person, try to stop the conversation and do not participate in it.
11. Protect people's secrets
If someone shares a personal matter with you in confidence, do not reveal it to others.
12. Do not expose people's faults unnecessarily
If someone makes a mistake, it is usually better to advise them privately and respectfully rather than expose them before others.

Manners Toward Parents
Being good to one's parents is one of the most important teachings of Islam.
Allah says:
“And worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and be good to parents.”
Some important manners toward parents are:
- Try to keep your parents happy.
- Serve them with love and sincerity.
- Greet them with Salam.
- Speak to them respectfully.
- Obey them in matters that are permissible.
- Regularly pray for their forgiveness and mercy.
- Respect the friends and relatives of your parents.
One of the beautiful Quranic supplications is:
“My Lord! Have mercy on them, just as they raised me when I was young.”
Even after parents pass away, a person can continue to benefit them by making dua for them and doing good deeds on their behalf where appropriate.
Manners of Friendship
Friends have a strong influence on our character. A good friend can encourage us toward goodness, while bad company can lead a person toward harmful habits.
Good qualities of friendship
1. Live with friends with love and kindness
Friendship should be based on sincerity and mutual respect.
2. Keep friendship for the sake of Allah
A friendship based on goodness and faith is stronger than one based only on worldly benefits.
3. Share their difficulties
A true friend stands beside his friend during difficult times and shares his happiness as well.
4. Choose good and righteous friends
Good company can improve a person's habits, character, and faith.
5. Make dua for your friends
Praying for a friend, especially when they are not present, is a beautiful expression of sincere friendship.

Manners of Eating and Drinking
Food is a blessing from Allah. Islam teaches us to eat with gratitude, moderation, and good manners.
1. Eat while sitting
A Muslim should normally eat while sitting in a comfortable and respectful manner.
2. Wash your hands
Washing the hands before eating is important for cleanliness and hygiene.
3. Say Bismillah
Before eating, say:
Bismillah
If you forget and remember during the meal, say:
“In the name of Allah at its beginning and its end.”
4. Eat with the right hand
The Prophet ﷺ taught Muslims to eat with the right hand.
5. Do not criticize food
The Prophet ﷺ did not insult or criticize food. If he liked it, he ate it; if he did not like it, he simply left it.
Therefore, we should not insult food or hurt the feelings of the person who prepared it.
6. Do not eat in an arrogant manner
A Muslim should eat with humility and good manners.
7. Avoid excess
Islam teaches moderation. We should avoid wastefulness and overeating.
8. Thank Allah after eating
After eating, a Muslim should praise Allah and thank Him for the food.
A well-known supplication is:
“All praise is for Allah, who fed me this and provided it for me without any power or strength from me.”
9. Clean the fingers after eating
There are authentic narrations encouraging a person to clean his fingers after eating, because he does not know where the blessing of the food may be.
Sunnah and Manners of Drinking Water
Water is one of Allah's greatest blessings. It should also be consumed with good manners.
1. Say Bismillah
Say Bismillah before drinking.
2. Drink with the right hand
Use the right hand when drinking.
3. Drink while sitting when possible
Drinking while sitting is generally preferable and is supported by many narrations. However, there are also authentic reports that the Prophet ﷺ drank while standing on some occasions. Therefore, drinking while standing should not simply be declared forbidden.
4. Drink with pauses
It is better to drink with pauses rather than finishing the water in one breath.
5. Do not breathe into the container
The Prophet ﷺ instructed Muslims not to breathe into the drinking vessel. This is mentioned in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.
6. Say Alhamdulillah afterward
After drinking, say:
Alhamdulillah
and thank Allah for the blessing.
It is worth noting that wearing a cap or removing shoes while drinking is not an established obligatory Sunnah. Such practices may be personal or cultural habits, but they should not be presented as a confirmed Sunnah without evidence.

Manners of Sleeping
Sleep is also part of our daily life, and following the Sunnah before sleeping can turn this ordinary activity into an act of worship.
1. Sleep with Wudu
Performing Wudu before going to sleep is a recommended Sunnah.
2. Dust your bed
The Prophet ﷺ taught Muslims to dust or shake their bedding before lying down.
3. Close the doors
At night, doors should be closed as part of taking reasonable precautions for safety.
4. Cover food and utensils
The Prophet ﷺ instructed Muslims to cover food and drinking vessels at night.
5. Recite the supplications before sleeping
Before sleeping, it is recommended to recite Ayat al-Kursi, the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah, and other authentic supplications.
The three Quls are also commonly recited:
The Prophet ﷺ would recite these, blow lightly into his hands, and wipe his body with them.
Before sleeping, one may also recite:
“O Allah, in Your name I die and I live.”
What should you do after a frightening dream?
If someone sees a disturbing dream, the Prophet ﷺ taught that he should seek Allah's protection from Satan, lightly spit toward his left side, and change his sleeping position.
He may say:
“I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan.”
These practices are a means of seeking Allah's protection. However, they should not be presented as a guaranteed cure or absolute protection from every specific problem. A believer should place his trust in Allah.
Manners of Using the Bathroom
Islam gives great importance to cleanliness and personal hygiene. It also teaches specific manners related to using the bathroom.
1. Recite the dua before entering
The Prophet ﷺ taught the following supplication:
“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the male and female devils.”
2. Enter with the left foot
It is part of Islamic manners to enter such places with the left foot.
3. Observe privacy
Proper covering and privacy should always be maintained.
4. Respect the direction of the Qiblah
In an open area, one should avoid facing or turning one's back toward the Qiblah while relieving oneself. The rulings concerning built bathrooms have detailed discussions among Islamic scholars.
5. Relieve yourself while sitting
Sitting while urinating is generally safer and helps prevent impurity from splashing onto the body or clothes.
6. Avoid unnecessary conversation
Unnecessary talking in the bathroom should be avoided.
7. Clean yourself with the left hand
The left hand should be used for cleaning after using the toilet, while the right hand is reserved for eating and other clean activities.
8. Wash your hands
After leaving the bathroom, wash your hands properly with soap and water.
9. Recite the dua after leaving
After leaving the bathroom, say:
“I seek Your forgiveness, O Allah.”
Manners of Reciting the Quran
The Quran is the Word of Allah, so it should be recited with respect, attention, and humility.
1. Maintain cleanliness
It is good to recite the Quran in a clean state and wear clean clothes.
2. Use fragrance
Using a pleasant fragrance is a good practice, especially when attending the mosque or a religious gathering.
3. Face the Qiblah when possible
Facing the Qiblah while reciting is a respectful practice when it is easy to do so. However, if it is not possible, one should not stop reciting the Quran.
4. Keep the Quran in a respectful place
The Quran should be placed somewhere clean and appropriate.
5. Recite A'udhu Billah and Bismillah
Before beginning the recitation, say:
and then Bismillah at the beginning of a Surah, except Surah At-Tawbah.
6. Recite slowly and correctly
The Quran should be recited with care, correct pronunciation, and reflection rather than rushing through the verses.
Allah says:
“And recite the Quran with measured recitation.”
7. Respect the Mushaf
The Quran should be handled respectfully and should not be treated like an ordinary book.
8. Observe the ruling regarding touching the Mushaf
The scholars have discussed detailed rulings concerning touching the physical Mushaf without Wudu. Therefore, it is best to maintain Wudu when handling the Mushaf.
9. Make dua after recitation
After reading the Quran, ask Allah to give you guidance, understanding, and the ability to act upon what you have read.

Manners of Making Dua
Dua is one of the greatest ways a believer connects with Allah. A person can present his needs, worries, hopes, and difficulties directly before his Lord.
1. Be clean and perform Wudu when possible
Performing Wudu before making dua is a good practice, although Wudu is not a condition for every dua.
2. Begin with praise of Allah
Before asking for something, praise Allah and acknowledge His greatness and blessings.
3. Send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ
Sending Durood upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is among the good manners of dua.
4. Face the Qiblah when possible
Facing the Qiblah during dua is a recommended practice when it is convenient.
5. Ask with humility
A person should make dua with sincerity, humility, and complete dependence on Allah.
6. Pray for yourself and others
Ask Allah for your own needs and also pray for your parents, family, friends, and the entire Muslim Ummah.
7. Ask Allah for everything you need
A believer should turn to Allah for guidance, forgiveness, beneficial knowledge, lawful provision, family well-being, protection, and goodness in this world and the Hereafter.
8. Wiping the face after dua
Wiping the face with the hands after dua is a matter on which scholars have discussed the authenticity of the relevant narrations. Therefore, it is better not to present it as an unquestionably established Sunnah.
Dua: A Believer's Connection with Allah
The phrase:
“Dua is the weapon of the believer.”
The meaning highlights the importance and power of dua. However, this exact statement should not simply be presented as an authentic hadith from Sunan Abi Dawud or Jami' at-Tirmidhi without qualification, because its attribution as a hadith has been discussed by scholars.
The importance of dua itself, however, is clearly established in the Quran and Sunnah.
Allah says:
“Call upon Me; I will respond to you.”
A believer should therefore turn to Allah in times of difficulty, need, fear, and hope.
How Can We Teach Islamic Manners to Children?
Islamic manners are not only for adults. They are an important part of children's upbringing.
Instead of trying to teach children everything at once, parents can introduce small habits into their daily routine.
For example, teach children to:
- Say Salam when entering the home.
- Say Bismillah before eating.
- Eat with the right hand.
- Say Alhamdulillah after drinking and eating.
- Speak respectfully to parents.
- Respect elders.
- Avoid lying.
- Avoid making fun of others.
- Recite the supplications before sleeping.
- Follow bathroom manners.
- Respect the Quran.
- Keep other people's secrets.
- Treat friends kindly.
Children learn not only from instructions but also from what they see at home.
If parents themselves say Salam, speak the truth, respect others, pray regularly, and use kind language, children are more likely to develop the same habits.

The Real Purpose of Islamic Manners
Islamic manners are not simply about memorizing a list of rules or supplications.
Their real purpose is to develop a person's character.
A person may wear clean clothes, but if his speech is rude, his character still needs improvement.
A person may say Bismillah before eating, but if he treats his parents badly, he needs to work on his behavior.
A person may perform many acts of worship, but if he harms other people or ignores their rights, he needs to correct his dealings as well.
Islam teaches both worship and good character.
The life of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the best example for us. He was excellent in worship, but he was also a model of kindness, patience, honesty, generosity, hospitality, respect, and good manners.
Conclusion
The everyday manners taught by Islam may sometimes appear simple, but these small habits play a major role in building a person's character.
Saying Salam, speaking the truth, respecting parents, choosing good friends, saying Bismillah before eating, eating with the right hand, following the manners of drinking, remembering Allah before sleeping, maintaining cleanliness, respecting the Quran, and making dua are all valuable parts of a Muslim's daily life.
The important thing is not simply to read about these manners, but to practice them.
We can begin with one habit today, improve another tomorrow, and gradually make Islamic manners a natural part of our lives.
True knowledge is reflected in action.
May Allah help us understand the Quran and Sunnah, follow them in our daily lives, and teach good Islamic manners to our children and future generations. Ameen.
