Social Media and Faith: Guiding the Youth in the Digital Age |

social-media-and-faith

Introduction — The Digital World of Today

Today, almost everyone has a smartphone, and people are connected to the internet throughout the day. Knowledge, news, opinions, and entertainment can travel from one person to another within seconds. Something that was once limited to a small gathering, mosque, or classroom can now reach thousands or even millions of people through a single video, article, or social media post.

For this reason, social media is no longer just a place for entertainment. It has become an important platform for education, communication, information, and public discussion. People also use it to learn about Islam. They listen to Quran recitations, study Hadith, learn about the Seerah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, read about Islamic history, and seek answers to their religious questions.

But there is another side to this picture.

Just as authentic knowledge can spread quickly, misinformation, weak or fabricated narrations, misunderstandings, inappropriate content, and incorrect explanations of Islamic teachings can also spread very quickly. Sometimes a statement becomes viral simply because it is emotional or presented in an attractive way, even though it may have little or no reliable basis.

The real issue, therefore, is not social media itself. It is how this powerful tool is used.

Social media can become a means of knowledge, guidance, and reform when it is used correctly. But it can also become a source of confusion and harm when it is used without knowledge or responsibility.

This raises an important question for our time:

Should qualified scholars and people of knowledge have a greater presence on social media?

There is certainly a need for them to use these modern communication tools with knowledge, wisdom, sincerity, and responsibility.

Times Have Changed, and the Means of Dawah Have Changed Too

In the past, people mainly learned about Islam through mosques, madrasahs, teachers, books, and religious gatherings. They would sit with scholars, ask questions, and learn directly from them.

These traditional methods are still extremely important. However, the way people access information has changed.

A young person who spends several hours a day on a smartphone may not attend a religious gathering regularly. But if authentic Islamic knowledge reaches that person through the same smartphone, they may listen, read, learn, and benefit from it.

In the past, a scholar might travel from one city to another to deliver a lecture. Today, a single well-prepared lecture can reach people in many different countries.

This does not mean that social media has replaced the mosque, madrassah, teacher, or traditional methods of Islamic learning. Rather, it has become an additional means of reaching people.

That is why understanding modern communication platforms and using them for beneficial purposes has become an important part of today's dawah environment.

Chapter 1: Six Essential Lessons – Foundation of Islamic Education Read Here

Social Media Is a Tool, Not the Problem

It would not be correct to describe social media only as a source of corruption or misguidance. The same platform can also be used to spread the Quran, Hadith, Islamic history, Seerah, Islamic manners, Fiqh, and beneficial reminders.

Someone who does not have easy access to Islamic books may be able to listen to a lesson by a qualified scholar through their phone.

A young Muslim who has a question about Islam may find a reliable explanation online.

A Muslim living in another country may not have easy access to local scholars, but may still benefit from trustworthy Islamic educational platforms.

Therefore, the real question is not simply whether social media should be used.

The more important question is:

How should this tool be used, and who should use it?

Why Is the Presence of Scholars Important?

Many people today turn to the internet when they have questions about Islam. If qualified scholars and reliable sources are not present in this environment, someone else will eventually fill that space.

The problem is that not everyone who speaks about Islam has sufficient knowledge of Islam.

Some people become popular because they have a powerful voice, attractive presentation, or an engaging style. Their videos may receive millions of views, but popularity does not automatically mean that their information is accurate.

This is where qualified scholars have an important role to play.

A scholar can explain an Islamic issue using the Quran and authentic Sunnah, provide appropriate references, explain differences of opinion, and guide people toward knowledge instead of emotional arguments.

The role of scholars is not only to correct wrong information. It is also to make correct knowledge available in a simple and understandable way.

It is not enough to tell people that something is wrong. They also need to be shown what is correct.

The Sin of Spreading Unverified News Read Here

Why Are Some Scholars Cautious About Social Media?

It is also important to recognize that many respected scholars are not highly active on social media. There can be several reasons for this, and we should not assume that every scholar has the same reason.

One reason is scholarly responsibility.

Speaking about religion is a serious responsibility. Even a short statement can sometimes be misunderstood or taken out of context. Because of this, some scholars prefer not to give quick answers without proper research.

Another reason is time.

Scholars may already have responsibilities related to teaching, writing, issuing religious guidance, studying, worship, and meeting people. Social media requires continuous attention, and without proper limits, a great deal of valuable time can be lost in unnecessary discussions.

There is also the nature of online communication.

Disagreements on social media can quickly become personal arguments. Scholars may face insults, accusations, mockery, or unnecessary debates. Avoiding such environments can sometimes be a wise decision.

Another concern is sincerity and popularity.

Social media makes views, likes, followers, and popularity highly visible. A person involved in religious work needs to regularly examine their intentions and make sure that popularity does not become the main goal.

Therefore, the caution of some scholars should not automatically be viewed as a weakness. In many cases, it can be a reflection of their concern for knowledge, time, and responsibility.

However, being cautious does not mean that qualified people should completely leave this space to others.

Being Present Is Not Enough — Quality Matters

If scholars enter social media, the goal should not simply be to have an account or a channel.

Their presence should be meaningful and beneficial.

A short but authentic video, a well-researched article, a clear answer to a common question, or a sincere reminder may benefit many people.

Every scholar does not need to produce videos every day.

One scholar may give a weekly lesson. Another may write articles. Another may answer questions. Someone else may work with a trusted team that prepares content under scholarly supervision.

The important things are accuracy, research, sincerity, and responsibility.

Building a Strong Foundation of Faith for Children Read Here

Going Viral and Being Beneficial Are Not the Same

Social media has created a mindset in which people often measure success through views, likes, shares, and followers.

But these numbers alone cannot be the standard for Islamic work.

An emotional video may receive millions of views without producing meaningful change in people's knowledge or character.

On the other hand, a serious educational article may be read by a smaller number of people but have a deeper and more lasting effect on those who read it.

For this reason, the success of Islamic work should not be measured only by views or followers.

Real success is when people receive authentic knowledge, their questions are answered, their character improves, and their relationship with Allah becomes stronger.

What Difference Can Qualified Scholars Make?

If qualified, balanced, and trustworthy scholars use social media with wisdom and proper planning, several positive results can follow.

First, the quality of Islamic information can improve.

Incorrect narrations and unsupported claims can be addressed with reliable references. People can also be taught how to distinguish between authentic Hadith, weak reports, popular sayings, and statements that have no reliable source.

Second, scholars can build a better connection with young people.

Young people have questions. Some questions are basic, while others are difficult and complicated. If they do not find respectful and reliable answers, they may search elsewhere.

This is where qualified scholars can make a real difference.

Third, misunderstandings about Islam can be addressed.

Short videos and posts can spread very quickly. A clear and timely scholarly explanation can sometimes prevent a misunderstanding from becoming even more widespread.

Fourth, the beauty of Islamic teachings can be presented to a wider audience.

Islam is not limited to legal rulings. The Quran and Sunnah also teach justice, mercy, patience, gratitude, good character, kindness to parents, rights of neighbors, good relationships, and a strong connection with Allah.

Social media can be used to share these teachings with ordinary people in an accessible way.

How Should Misinformation Be Addressed?

Correcting misinformation also requires wisdom.

It is not necessary to respond to every incorrect post. Sometimes repeatedly mentioning a minor false claim can actually give it more attention.

However, when an incorrect claim is spreading widely and may affect people's understanding of Islam, a clear and well-researched response from qualified people can be very beneficial.

The focus should be on correcting the information rather than attacking individuals.

For example, it is more useful to explain that a narration does not have a reliable source than to immediately label the person sharing it as a liar.

Similarly, when dealing with a disagreement, the discussion should focus on evidence and principles rather than questioning the intentions of other Muslims.

This kind of approach keeps Islamic discussion respectful and turns disagreement into an opportunity for learning.

Dealing With Differences of Opinion

Discussing Islamic differences on social media requires particular care.

In many matters of Islamic law, recognized scholars and schools of thought may have different opinions. Ordinary readers may not always know the background of these differences.

Therefore, presenting one position as though no other recognized scholarly view exists can create unnecessary misunderstanding.

This is especially important in short videos, where there is very little space to explain details.

Where a genuine scholarly difference exists, it can be explained in a simple and respectful way. For example, a person can mention that scholars have different views on the issue and then explain the position according to the school or scholarly tradition being followed.

This approach preserves academic honesty and can also reduce unnecessary arguments among Muslims.

Research Should Be the Foundation of Islamic Content

For anyone creating Islamic content, research should be one of the most important principles.

Whether the content contains a Quranic verse, Hadith, statement of a Companion, or an Islamic historical event, the source should be checked whenever a reference is needed.

Special care is needed with popular quotations circulating on social media. The fact that a saying is commonly attributed to a famous Companion, Imam, or scholar does not automatically prove that the attribution is authentic.

The same applies to Hadith.

Not every popular Hadith is authentic.

A person involved in Islamic content should never share something simply because it sounds beautiful, emotional, or is being widely shared.

A false religious statement does not become true simply because thousands of people share it.

A Few Important Reminders for Young Islamic Content Creators

Young Muslims who are involved in Islamic work on social media have an important responsibility.

First, keep your intention sincere. Do not turn religious work into a competition for popularity, followers, or recognition.

Second, do not publish religious information without checking it. If you are unsure about something, it is better to wait and verify it than to share it immediately.

Third, do not turn differences into personal conflicts. A person who disagrees with you is not necessarily your enemy, and every disagreement does not require a harsh response.

Fourth, be careful with your words. A single sentence written online can reach thousands of people.

Fifth, avoid exaggerated headlines and unsupported claims. Statements such as "This is definitely a Hadith" or "Islam says only this" should be used responsibly and only after proper verification.

Most importantly, remember that your character is also part of your dawah.

If someone calls people toward Islam but uses insults, mockery, arrogance, or harsh language, the message itself can lose its effect.

Before posting something, it is useful to ask yourself:

Am I writing this to please Allah, or simply to satisfy my own ego?

A Better Approach to Islamic Work on Social Media

Effective Islamic work does not mean publishing more and more content every day. The content should have a clear purpose.

One platform may focus on explaining the Quran in simple language. Another may focus on Hadith research. Another may answer common questions from young people. Others may focus on Seerah, Islamic history, Islamic manners, or practical religious education.

Different forms of content can also be used:

Short videos, detailed articles, question-and-answer sessions, reference-based posts, Islamic history series, Quran and Hadith lessons, and practical reminders.

At the same time, the language should be understandable to ordinary people.

Being scholarly does not mean being unnecessarily complicated.

A knowledgeable scholar can explain a deep subject in simple language, and this is one of the great needs of our time.

Does Every Scholar Need to Be on Social Media?

Not necessarily.

Every scholar has different strengths, responsibilities, and circumstances.

For one scholar, teaching may be the best form of service. For another, writing books may be more beneficial. Another may focus on issuing religious guidance, while another may be well suited to online education.

The important point is that qualified scholars should not completely ignore the changing environment in which people are now learning and asking questions.

They can participate directly, or they can work through a reliable team under proper scholarly supervision.

For example, a scholar may supervise a team of young people who handle video editing, website management, graphic design, and social media. The scholar or qualified researchers can focus on reviewing the Islamic content before it is published.

In this way, knowledge and modern technology can work together.

A Respectful Appeal to Muslim Scholars

Respected scholars are among the people entrusted with Islamic knowledge. Today, the digital world has opened a new field before them.

This field is not easy.

It contains misinformation, unnecessary arguments, the temptation of popularity, and the risk of wasting time.

But it also contains millions of people who genuinely want reliable Islamic guidance.

Young people have questions. They want to understand the Quran. They want to know about Hadith. They want to learn about the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. They are also looking for answers to questions that may sometimes be difficult to discuss elsewhere.

If they can find qualified scholars who speak with knowledge, wisdom, and good character, that can be a great benefit for them.

Therefore, those scholars who have the ability, time, and suitable circumstances may consider using these modern platforms to serve Islam.

This does not mean that every scholar needs to answer every question, participate in every debate, or make a video about every trending topic.

Rather, the goal should be to speak when speaking is beneficial, remain silent when silence is wiser, and provide correction when correction is needed — always with knowledge, wisdom, and good manners.

Allah says:

"Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and discuss with them in the best manner."

These principles are not limited to traditional forms of dawah. They are equally important in today's digital environment.

Evidence should be accompanied by good character.

Knowledge should be accompanied by wisdom.

Disagreement should be accompanied by fairness.

And dawah should be accompanied by sincerity.

A New Field of Dawah

Just as the pen, books, mosques, madrasahs, and gatherings have historically been important means of spreading Islamic knowledge, digital platforms have now become another means of reaching people.

Today, a short video can reach someone who may never attend a religious gathering.

A well-researched article may answer a question that a young person has been searching for over a long period of time.

A single authentic Hadith may touch someone's heart.

A sincere reminder may improve the atmosphere of a home.

But all of this requires knowledge, research, sincerity, and wisdom.

The real strength of social media is not only its speed, but also its reach. When that reach is used with authentic knowledge and good character, social media can become a powerful means of Islamic education, dawah, and positive change.
