(Engaging Hook)
The Punishment for Cheating in Trade and Withholding Zakat
Introduction (The Hook)
Have you ever wondered why our societies often face a shortage of blessing (Barakah)? Why do we constantly struggle with inflation and economic distress? Why are the rains often withheld? More than 1,400 years ago, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) identified two hidden sins that invite divine displeasure upon an entire nation, leading to the very punishments we witness today. This Hadith is not just a spiritual message; it is a profound socio-economic principle and a truthful prophecy of our downfall.
The Prophetic Warning (The Core Hadith)
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“...They do not cheat in weights and measures but they will be stricken with famine, severe calamity and the oppression of their rulers. They do not withhold the Zakah of their wealth, but rain will be withheld from the sky, and were it not for the animals, no rain would fall on them...”
The concept of "cheating in weights and measures" extends far beyond traditional scales. In today's world, it includes:
Selling low-quality goods or engaging in adulteration (mixing).
Breaking promises or failing to fulfill contractual obligations.
Negligence in work or not giving one's full time and effort in employment.
Failing to complete any given responsibility sincerely and fully.
When a nation adopts dishonesty, Allah removes the blessing from its wealth, economic conditions worsen, and just rulers are replaced by oppressive ones.
2. Withholding Zakat: Shutting the Door to Blessing
Zakat is the fundamental pillar of wealth purification and social justice in Islam. When people fail to pay this due right, society falls into imbalance.
Why is the Rain Withheld? (The Punishment)
According to the Hadith, the greatest environmental and collective punishment for withholding Zakat is that Allah withholds rain from the sky.
Rain is a clear sign of Allah's mercy and the source of life.
Its cessation is a direct manifestation of divine displeasure, leading to drought and scarcity.
Hoarding wealth prevents its circulation, increasing poverty, envy, and class division, which ultimately causes economic collapse.
Juridical Ruling: Withholding Zakat intentionally is a Major Sin (Kabeerah). The Islamic government (or a just authority) has the right to forcefully collect Zakat from those who refuse to pay it.
A Call for Reflection and Practical Reform
If we look around today and observe drought, high inflation, and a lack of blessing, we must examine our own actions. Allah's law is constant and true:
"Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves."
Complete Honesty in Trade: Avoid all forms of deception, lying, and non-standard quality goods.
Ensure Zakat Payment: Calculate your wealth accurately upon the completion of the year and pay your Zakat promptly and willingly.
Promote Social Justice (Infaaq): Go beyond obligatory Zakat; give Sadaqah (voluntary charity) to maintain social balance.
Repentance and Supplication (Istighfar): If faced with drought, offer the Salat-ul-Istisqa (Prayer for Rain) accompanied by sincere collective repentance.
This Hadith teaches us an absolute law: our prosperity and well-being depend not merely on political or economic policies, but on our adherence to honesty, trust, and the fulfillment of Allah's rights (Zakat).
Let us make a pledge today:
We will never cheat in any dealing,
and we will pay Zakat with sincerity and joy,
so that Allah may shower His mercy and blessings upon us.
